On 3/27/20 At approx. 10:11PM WPD received several 911 calls about a roll over motor vehicle accident in the area of Detroit and Cobblestone in Westlake. Police and fire crews responded to find that the driver was standing outside the lone vehicle involved. The driver was transported to UH St. John Medical Center for possible injuries. Investigation revealed that the 26yo operator drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a utility pole causing the Kia Sportage to roll onto its side. The roadway was closed for about 45 minutes while the scene was cleaned up and CEI worked on stabilizing the pole. The female was cited for failure to control but drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved.
Hit-Skip with Drugs
On 3/28/20 at about 1:40PM a motorist reported that he had been involved in a motor vehicle accident with another car on I90. Both vehicles exited the highway and entered the parking lot at Canterbury Square shopping center on Detroit Rd. The male operator from the other car then jumped out of the driver’s seat and fled on foot westbound behind Jefferson Square shopping center. Officers soon found the male who was so reluctant to have contact with the police, behind a business on Detroit at Canterbury. It took awhile to make a list of all the reasons the 25yo male from Westlake did not want to see an officer. These included narcotic pills, suspected methamphetamine, a butane lighter, glass pipes, suspected marijuana, balloons, empty sandwich bags and beer bottles. Some of the evidence was discarded along the path between his abandoned vehicle and where the officers caught up with him. Other evidence was still with him when found. The male was cited with hit-skip and failure to maintain assured clear distance. Additional criminal charges are pending lab results for the felony drugs.
Theft Reports by Phone Please
On 3/30/20 at approx. 12:30PM a citizen called WPD to report that a fur coat was missing from her home. While taking the report over the phone, the police officer learned that the complainant recently moved to Westlake from Chagrin Falls. When unpacking, the mink fur coat was found to be missing. Investigators are following up with the moving company. ***Note that due to the current situation and in the best interest of keeping our employees, as well as the citizens we serve socially distanced, WPD is taking many reports over the phone and via online reporting. We will still take the report and investigate crimes that occur in Westlake – although the process may look a bit different. Drug ODs
WPD responded to 2 drug overdoses this week. Luckily due to the quick response of Westlake Police and Fire Departments, neither ended up with a death. On 3/30/20 at 10:26PM a caller reported finding his friend unconscious in a room at the Red Roof Inn on Clemens. Officers responded and performed 1 st aid which included administering multiple doses of narcan. The 28yo female revived and was transported to the hospital by the fire department. Drug paraphernalia was recovered from the room. The second instance was on 3/31/20 at about 2:30PM. A caller reported a possible drug overdose and full cardiac arrest of a 24yo at a residence on Bassett Rd. Paramedics administered narcan to the male who revived. Drug paraphernalia including a burnt spoon and tourniquet were recovered from the bathroom where the male passed out. Both subjects were referred to drug assessments.
Shoplifter
On 3/31/20 at about 3:30PM officers were dispatched to Market District at Crocker Park for a reported shoplifter. The 43yo Bay Village female was caught by loss prevention taking around $90 worth of groceries. She was summoned to appear in Rocky River Municipal Court and was banned from the grocery store.
On 4/2/20 at approx. 8:45AM an officer was dispatched to the WPD lobby to take a theft report. The complainant reported that she believed that her wallet and check book were taken from her purse while she was shopping at Market District at Crocker Park the previous evening. Neither her credit cards nor her checks had been used at the time of the report. Officers are following up with surveillance footage at the store.
