Wild Week in Westlake: Distraction Burglary, Nervous Breakdown and Drugs with Baby in Car

It’s been a wild week for the Westlake Police Department!

Nervous Breakdown

On 5/1/20 at approx. 2:00AM officers responded to a report of a female who was having a described nervous breakdown and was violent.  The 56yo reportedly left her residence in the area of Crocker and Center Ridge Rds and was brandishing a handgun.  Officers advised UH St. John Medical Center which was briefly put on a lockdown.  North Olmsted PD responded to help in the search and containment of the person who was reportedly in distress.  The female was soon located in a parking lot of the hospital hiding under a vehicle.  She was taken into custody and admitted that she had a weapon but had ditched it while on foot between her house and the parking lot.  A WPD K9 assisted the officers searching for the unsecured firearm which was eventually found in the area of the parking lot.  The pistol, which turned out to be a realistic looking BB gun, was taken for safe keeping.  The female was escorted to the UHSJMC ED for treatment.

Distraction Burglary Suspected

On 4/24/20 at approx. 2:10PM WPD received a report of a distraction type burglary of a residence on Dover Center south of Rose Rd.  The homeowner was outside the house when a male wearing a reflective vest approached the elderly victim and told her he worked for a utility company and needed to check something important in her basement.  The male, described as in his 40s and pudgy, was wearing a denim jacket.  The suspect insisted that if the meter or pump were not checked the house could catch fire.  The victim followed the male to the basement but soon heard others walking around upstairs.  When she went to check, she found 2 other males walking around the 1st floor.  All the males left through the back door after being confronted.  The other 2 males were described as tall and thin.  Officers completed a burglary report and collected evidence although nothing appeared to be missing from inside the home.

Curbside Drugs with Baby

On 4/27/20 at approx. 10:00AM officers responded to the Promenade at Crocker Park for a drug law complaint.  An employee of one of the eateries reported that as she delivered a curb side order to a car in the lot, she observed several bags of suspected marijuana in plain sight and one of the occupants was “rolling a joint” in front of a baby who was also inside.  Officers responded and also saw suspected marijuana.  Investigation revealed that the occupants had glass jars of marijuana and other paraphernalia in addition to white powder which the suspects admitted was cocaine.  The passenger, a 21yo from Cleveland, was cited with possession of marijuana.  The driver, also 21 and from Cleveland, was cited with Possession of drug paraphernalia along with possession of marijuana and cocaine.  The adult passenger’s 8 month old baby was in the vehicle and appeared to be fine.  They were all sent on their way with court dates.  Cuyahoga County Child and Family services was notified about the incident and hopefully can provide resources to those involved.

Grungy Shoplifters

On 4/24/20 at about 3:10PM officers responded to the CVS on Detroit at Bradley for a reported theft.  Employees said that 2 grungy looking males left in a vehicle S/B on Bradley.  One of the males had entered the store and took almost $1000 worth of merchandise including shavers and teeth whitening strips.  Officers checked the area but could not located the car.  They are following up on evidence collected at the scene.
