Westlake Porter Public Library Participates in Countywide “One Community Reads” Effort

Westlake Porter Public Library has joined with Cuyahoga County’s eight other library systems to present the One Community Reads program, which focuses on Racial Equity in America. The program will allow readers to learn about and reflect on race, history, and a more just future locally and nationally. In addition to reading and discussing the same books, participants are encouraged to join in the conversation about the issues they cover at onecommunityreads.org.

In addition to the programs offered throughout the county through December, the following program will be offered at WPPL:

Tuesday, October 13 (7-8:30 p.m.)

Book Discussion: March: Book One (graphic novel) by John Lewis

Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club for a discussion of the graphic novel version of the late Congressman’s memoir, including the Civil Rights movement. The discussion will include an interview with local comic book creator Abdul Rashid. Electronic copies of the book are available through Hoopla digital. Please REGISTER to receive an invitation to the discussion on Zoom. Participants without a computer, tablet or smartphone can join using a traditional phone.

Abdul H. Rashid, a native of Flint, MI, is an illustrator, creator, and developer of intellectual properties in the genres of superhero, sci-fi, action-adventure and horror concepts. As CEO/Founder of AHR Visions, LLC, a trans-media pop-culture studio, he looks to inject a new catalog of fresh, diverse and exciting titles that reflect the very colorful society we live in. Using comics as the primary platform to tell an array of stories, Rashid and AHRV are spotlighting diverse characters and inclusive elements outside the industry’s “traditional blueprint.” Rashid’s work has been featured in several independent works as well as MARVEL distributed series.

One Community Reads culminates with a talk by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to be an Antiracist, on Friday, December 4 at 2 p.m. For more information on this and other program news please check the WPPL website at westlakelibrary.org or the One Community Reads website at onecommunityreads.org.
