Congratulations to 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student Evan Cowin

Being named a Commended Student puts Evan Cowin in the top 34,000 scorers in The National Merit Scholarship program. Each year, more than 1.5 million high school students across the nation enter the National Merit Scholarship Program competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Evan was one of five Westlake students to be recognized as a Commended Student, and for his achievement, Evan will receive a Letter of Commendation from Westlake High School and from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program.

“My parents were always such huge motivations throughout high school, and really throughout life. They’ve always been there to support me and have always backed me on anything new I wanted to try,” Evan said of the motivation behind his accomplishment. “I think my high test scores have meant the most to me only because they were proof to myself that I am capable of doing well; that I get only as much as I put in.”

After high school, Evan plans to attend Rice University where he will study nuclear physics. He eventually hopes to build his own home and develop his own ideas into functional mechanisms.

Aside from his studies, Evan has a goal to travel the world and experience new and different places. He wants to have an adventure and make a lot of new friends along his way. But for now, he spends his free time biking, hiking and rock climbing. Evan also loves music and plays a number of different instruments.
