Westlake Police Issue Scam Alert

Westlake Police have issued a SCAM ALERT warning residents to beware of callers using City of Westlake phone numbers to claim unfounded Amazon debts from residents.

The release: “We have been receiving reports from residents about scam calls today. The callers, who seem to be calling from phone numbers belonging to the Westlake Service Department, say they are reps from AMAZON. They threaten the victim with criminal prosecution due to outstanding debt from AMAZON. Most of the time they want the frightened person to go buy gift cards to pay for these fake bills, or want to learn the personal passwords or credit card info of the person. DO NOT FALL VICTIM – these are fraudsters and evidently can become quite verbally aggressive. Hang up and don’t call back if you receive a voice mail. They seem to be targeting the older population so please pass the word – especially to your older friends, relatives and neighbors. DO NOT BUY GIFT CARDS to pay for debts brought to your attention from a phone call or email (private companies, government, police, warrants, FBI – whatever). This is always a scam.”
