Changing of Guard for Avon Fire Leadership

Retiring Avon Fire Chief Frank Root III accepts a plaque of appreciation from Lt. James Fischer at his retirement ceremony two weeks ago.

Congratulations to retiring Avon Fire Chief Frank Root III and newly inaugurated Fire Chief David Swope.

Chief Root retired two weeks ago after 37 years of service to the community. He was awarded a plaque by fellow firefighters and heard words of gratitude and praise from Mayor Bryan Jensen.

Root III ascended to Chief in 2006 and oversaw the greatest period of growth in the history of the community’s fire and paramedic service. Shifts grew from 5-10 firefighters each, the fleet of equipment doubled and the Avon’s first aerial ladder truck was put into service on his watch. Root III, all the while, maintained a reputation as a hands-on Chief who took personal interest in and responsibility for every call.

Mayor Bryan Jensen administers the Oath of Office to newly sworn-in Avon Fire Chief David Swope last week.

The inauguration of David Swope caps a consistent rise through the ranks for this veteran civic servant. He started with the Avon Fire Department in 2001 and rose through the ranks, being promoted to lieutenant in 2007, captain in 2012 and Asst. Chief last year. He now directs 30 firefighters and five administrators. Avon equipment includes three ambulances, three fire engines, fire prevention cars, utility trucks and the aerial ladder truck all operating from the large Detroit Road Fire Station.
