September 1-11 (All Day) Commemorating 9/11 – Help us commemorate all who lost their lives on 9/11 by sharing a special memory of the event or a wish or hope for the future on a star to be hung in Christina’s Corner. Then visit on 9/11 or the following week to read all of the memories, hopes and wishes and spend time with loved ones. In addition you can view the poster exhibit September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World in the library’s art gallery area starting September 1. All ages.
Wednesday, September 1 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Are you scared yet? Join your fellow fiends for an in-person viewing! Or, if you’d prefer to watch online you can join us Watch2Gether.com. The link to our viewing site will be made available on the library’s online calendar of events (westlakelibrary.org/events) a little before the event. Please note: You do not need an account with Watch2Gether to participate. New members are always welcome, but children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please register.
Thursday, September 2 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile
Thursday, September 2 (7-8 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is What You Wish For by Katherine Center. This group will meet in person in the library’s Reading Garden, weather-permitting. In case of inclement weather we will meet on Zoom. Registrants will be emailed Zoom information if that is the case. The group will also meet on the first Thursday of November. Due to the extended time frame, participants will need to obtain their own copies of the title. Please register.
Saturday, September 4 (4-5 p.m.) STEAM Maker Lab: Mars Base Camp – Red Planet Odyssey—Introduction of the engineering design process through building a rover and going on an exploratory mission on Mars. Grades 3-5. Please Note: This program is weather permitting. Staff will make every effort to notify you in a timely manner if we cannot meet in person. In that case Zoom invitations will be sent by email A decision will be made 24 hours in advance to allow time to pick up supplies if we aren’t meeting in person. Registration begins August 28.

Tuesday, September 7 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Teen Craft Pick Up – Come to the Youth Services Department to pick up a craft kit. Grades 7-12. Registration begins August 31.
Tuesday, September 7 Fall Storytimes – Storytimes are back! The Fall Storytime session begins September 7. Registration opens one week before each program. Storytimes are as follows:
- LAPSIT STORYTIME – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! For children ages birth – 24 months with adult caregiver. 9:30-10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
- TODDLER STORYTIME – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! For children ages 2 – 3 1/2 w/ a caregiver. 10:15-10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
- PRESCHOOL STORYTIME – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 3 1/2 – 5 with a caregiver. Siblings are welcome. 11-11:30 a.m. (Tuesdays only), 1-1:30 a.m. (Wednesdays only)
- PAJAMA STORYTIME – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. 7-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays
Tuesday, September 7 (Noon-1 p.m.) Sepsis The Silent Killer: Know the Signs and Save a Life – Join us on Zoom to learn about sepsis – its causes, how to recognize the symptoms and how to prevent it. Presented by Donna Ross, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CHFN and Kelly Orlosky, BSN, RN of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital. Please register. You will receive a Zoom link by email.
Tuesday, September 7 (6-7:30 p.m.) Great Decisions (Live) – Join us on Zoom for a lively discussion of the most critical issues facing America today. Based on materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Readings will be available ahead of time; to receive a copy please email chad.statler@westlakelibrary.org. Please register. Participants will receive Zoom instructions by email.
Wednesdays, September 8 and 22 (4-5 p.m.) Fall Teen Writers Workshop (Live) – A twice a month meet up for writers in grades 7-12. In this workshop, we’ll be prepping for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November. Hit the ground running in November by getting organized and brainstorming within a supportive group of young writers. We’ll also share tips and tricks to maintaining a productive writing environment. Registration begins September 1. Participants must provide an email address in order to receive Zoom instructions. Zoom instructions will be sent the day of the program.
Wednesday, September 8 (7-8:30 p.m.) and Tuesday, September 14 (10-11:30 a.m.) Excel 1: Introduction – Practice entering and formatting text and numbers within cells. Insert, delete, and modify columns and rows. Begin working with basic formulas. Class is in person. Capacity is limited. Software version is Excel 2019. Registration begins one week before each session.
Thursdays, September 9 and 23 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Roblox Arcade (Live) – Love Roblox? Then join us in the Roblox Arcade! We have some private servers set up for Tweens in grades 4-6 to hang out with their friends and enjoy some of the most popular games via Zoom. Registration begins September 2.
Thursday, September 9 (6:30-7 p.m.) and Friday, September 17 (10-10:30 a.m.) Adapted Storytime in the Garden – Children ages 3-7 with varying learning styles and abilities learn together in a safe and supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences is encouraged. This 30-minute storytime is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Siblings may attend but must register separately. This program is weather permitting. Staff will make every effort to notify you in a timely manner if we cannot meet in-person. If we cannot meet in-person Zoom invitations will be sent to all registered attendees. Please register every person that will be attending, including children and adults. At this time, caregivers must stay with their child(ren) during the programming. Registration begins September 2.
Friday, September 10 (4-4:45 p.m.) The Science of Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark – There is science inside the Magic Tree House books. Let’s begin with Dinosaurs Before Dark and explore the world of dinosaurs, from fossils and eggs to carnivores and herbivores. Grades 1-2. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take home project. This program is weather permitting. Registration begins September 3.
Saturday, September 11 (11-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun (Live) – Join Miss Rachel for a Pokemon Zoom meeting! We’ll play a “Guess that Pokemon” game and have time for show and tell. Feel free to bring a favorite Pokemon card or toy for show and tell! Registration begins September 4. Participants must provide an email address to receive Zoom instructions, which will be sent the day of the program.
Monday, September 13 (11-11:30 a.m.) Gross Motor Monday – Start your week with some movement activities! We will have fun balancing, jumping, tossing, marching and more! For children ages 3-7 with special needs. This program is led by a librarian, not a therapist, physician or exercise professional. This program is weather permitting. If we cannot meet in-person, we will meet on Zoom and Zoom invites will be sent to all registered attendees. Please register every person that will be attending, including children and adults. Caregivers must stay with their child(ren) during programming. Registration begins September 6.
Monday, September 13 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge for video games, board games, crafts, snacks and more! Grades 7-12.
Monday, September 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Transfer Memories to Digital at Home (Live) – On Zoom, learn what you can check out from WPPL’s Non-Traditional Materials Collection to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD, cassettes to MP3, records to mp3, and more! Please register. Participants must provide a valid email address to receive Zoom information.
Tuesday, September 14 (1-3 p.m.) Career Transition: Tips for the Best Job Search Package (Live) – How do you present yourself on paper to potential employers? Does your resume make them want to take a closer look at you? Does your LinkedIn profile support your resume and provide a cohesive representation of you? Join Cynthia Wilt on Zoom with your documents so that we can ask questions and audit what you have. Let’s make an honest assessment of your job search package. Please register. Thursday, September 16 (10-11:30 a.m.) Windows 10 Introduction – Learn how to work with the basic features of Windows 10. Work with the Start Menu, Tiles, access settings, Task View, Action Center, and Microsoft Edge. This class is in person. Capacity is limited. Registration begins September 9.
Thursday, September 16 (4-5 p.m.) Introduction to Finding Grants (Live) – Discover what funders are looking for in nonprofits seeking grants and how to find potential funders in this introductory course. You will learn the 10 most important things you need to know about finding grants. A demo of hands-on, guided online grant research using the Foundation Directory Online database will be provided. Please register.
Friday, September 17 (10 a.m.-Noon) Nonprofit Community Hours – Do you have questions regarding nonprofit management and fundraising? Schedule a one-on-one, 15-minute virtual reference session with WPPL’s Candid FIN Manager to discuss the needs of your 501(c)(3) organization and the various resources available to you.
