Avon High football coach Mike Elder likes to say the Southwestern Conference is the toughest around.
He has one heck of an argument there! Avon will meet Olmsted Falls this Friday at Strongsville’s Pat Catan Stadium in a rematch of this year’s SWC champs. Both teams are 10-2 and lodged 6-1 SWC records to share the SWC title (although Avon defeated the Bulldogs in the regular season, 42-29).
You can throw all that out the window, however, as hard-hitting playoff football is the post-season formula for these team’s as they play with no tomorrow.
Avon (ranked second in the region) advances to the Regional semifinals on the strength of a 52-26 victory over No. 7 Fremont Ross at Avon’s Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet Stadium in a Division II, Region 6 quarterfinal football game last Friday. Falls, ranked 6th, pounded third-ranked Barberton, 41-7 the same night to advance.
The victor will take on the winner of the Medina Highland (11-1) – Toledo Central Catholic next week for a regional title and a trip to state.
In 2021, Avon won its 6th straight Southwestern Conference title. The Eagles are also making their 15th state playoff appearance and have won Regional titles the last four years in a row.
