Westlake Porter Public Library’s Early June Calendar of Events

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s early June 2022 calendar of events. All programs are subject to change. Please check westlakelibrary.org or follow the library on Facebook and Twitter (@WestlakePorter) for the latest updates.

Wednesdays, June 1, 15, and 29 (3-4 p.m.) Family Game and Puzzle Time – Put together a puzzle or enjoy a game at the library! You can bring your own or use one of ours! Ages 3-12. Families can gather and have fun in an understanding and empathetic environment. This program is inclusive and is for those with disabilities and typical peers. Registration begins one week before each session.

Wednesday, June 1 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Join us in person or stream on Watch2Gether.com. The link will be posted at 6 p.m. the day of the program. Please register.

Thursday, June 2 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Friday, June 3 (10:30-11 a.m.) Pride Storytime – Join us for storytime to celebrate Pride and LGBTQ+ families! We will share books, songs, and music! Registration begins May 27.

Friday, June 3 (4-5 p.m.) and Sunday, June 12 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Saturday, June 4 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) Medicare Ins and Outs – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? Attend a presentation by OSHIIP, Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program, to learn the “ins and outs” of Medicare. Please register.

Saturdays, June 7, 11 and 18 (10:30-11 a.m.) and Wednesdays, June 8 and 15 (7-7:30 p.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! For families with children ages 2-6. Siblings are welcome. Registration begins one week before each session.

Sunday, June 5 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – An open playtime for children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required but room capacity is limited. First come, first served.

Monday, June 6 (3:30-4 p.m.) Messy Monday – Wear your play clothes and get ready for some messy play, such as finger painting. This inclusive program is for children of all abilities. Ages 3-7. Registration begins June 30.

Tuesday, June 7 (2-4:30 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Patriotic Necklace and Earrings – Impress others and celebrate the patriotic holidays by creating a red, white, and blue necklace and earrings using red, white, and blue glass beads. Registration begins May 31.

Tuesday, June 7 (7-8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum – The World at War Forum is a group of local people interested in the history of the first fifty years of the twentieth century and the cataclysmic World Wars and associated events that helped shape our current world. The June program will be D-Day Reenactors. Early in the morning of June 6, 1944, American paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division jumped into France to secure key objectives and to prepare the way for successful landings on the Normandy beaches. At this meeting of the World at War Forum, we will welcome members of Baker Company who portray paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division. They will share their 2019 trip to Normandy France and will bring along period accurate gear used by paratroopers during World War II. Please register.

Tuesday, June 7 (7-8:15 p.m.) VOICES Book Discussion – Join us for a bimonthly book discussion with a focus on #OwnVoices and #DiverseAuthors titles that depict various experiences, identities, and intersectionality. This month we are reading Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters. Please register.

Wednesday, June 8 (7-8 p.m.) Author Visit: Angeline Walsh – Author and filmmaker Angeline Walsh discusses her serial novel, The Reign of Victoria; or, the Year Everything Changed, which is being published in monthly installments on the author’s website. Learn about the inspiration behind the book, the author’s unique creative and writing processes, and the historical setting. Walsh will also have copies of her previous novel, Memento Mortale, her poetry collection, Bad Psychiatry, and some Victoria-themed merchandise to sell following the event. Please register.

Friday, June 10 (4-4:30 p.m.) Read It, Make It @ the Library – Make a craft based on a story that is read aloud. Grades PreK-1, siblings are welcome. Registration begins June 3.

Saturday, June 11 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun – Join Miss Rachel for Pokémon fun! This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft (if desired), and play a Pokémon bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards! Ages 6-11. Registration begins June 4.

Saturday, June 11 (2-3 p.m.) Burlesque Fundamentals – Build your confidence and learn the building block movements of classic burlesque! Join performer and instructor Eliza Sidecar as she shares a little background, ​presents the history of this particular performance style while teaching attendees basic burlesque dance moves and combos. All genders and abilities welcome; a pair of short heels is recommended (but not required). Please register.

Saturday, June 11 (9-10:30 p.m.) Movies Under the Stars – Enjoy a feature length newly released DVD or favorite family classic. Contact the library for specific titles. We will be outside in our field enjoying an evening under the stars. Movies will begin at dusk so feel free to bring lawn chairs and blankets for chilly evenings. Snacks are okay to bring. Building restrooms will be accessible. Caregivers must stay with their child(ren) during programming. No registration required.

Sunday, June 12 (2-4 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otaku and newbies welcome! Grades 7-Adult. Registration opens June 5.

Monday, June 13 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Crafty Adults Kit Pick-Up – Feeling crafty? Make a craft project of your own with this simple pick-up kit. For adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Registration begins June 6.

Monday, June 13 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Tween Craft Kit Pick-Up – A take home craft for grades 4-6. Registration begins June 6.

Monday, June 13 (2-3:30 p.m.) Finding Your Ancestors with City Directories – City Directories are a great resource to find out more information about your ancestors. They can help you fill in information missing from Census and other records. Inside them you can find information about local churches, civic organizations, and fraternal societies along with businesses. Additionally you can find information about where your ancestors lived, their occupations, and who lived around them. Join Local History Librarian, Chad Statler, as he discusses some of the uses of City Directories in your genealogical research, including where to locate them and how to use them. Please register.

Monday, June 13 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Picnic Fun! – Join us outside for an American Girl Doll Club picnic! Ages 6-10. Registration begins June 6.

Monday, June 13 (7-8:45 p.m.) Protecting Your Creativity: I Have This Idea…What’s Next? – What is intellectual property and what are the steps that you can take to protect it? Liza J. M. Heinig, Partner of Tarolli, Sundheim, Covell & Tummino LLP will discuss the different types of intellectual property and the different methods available to protect your ideas. Registration now open.

Monday, June 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Alternatives to Cable TV – Frustrated with cable? Let us help you sort through the alternatives available. This program will help you sort through the variety of alternatives to cable services available. Learn about digital media players, streaming services, and additional options. Please register.

Tuesdays, June 14, 21 and 28 (2-2:30 p.m.) Reading Buddies – Partner up with one of our teen reading buddies to practice your reading skills and share your favorite stories! Grades 1-3. Registration begins one week before each session.

Tuesday, June 14 (2-3 p.m.) Teen Crafts: Pride Month Edition – Celebrate Pride Month with a crafting session making magnets, keychains and buttons. For teens in grades 7-12. Registration begins June 7, but drop-ins are welcome.

Tuesday, June 14 (4-4:45 p.m.) The Science of Magic Tree House: Midnight on the Moon – Join Mrs. K as we explore the book Midnight on the Moon in celebration of the Supermoon. Grades 1-2. Registration begins June 7.

Tuesday, June 14 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Wednesday, June 15 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – This month’s title is Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. A limited number of books are available at the Circulation Desk. Please register.

Thursday, June 16 (10-11:30 a.m.) Computer Basics & Introduction to Northstar – Learn how to turn on a computer, use a mouse, go online, and access Northstar Digital Literacy for self-paced online learning. Registration begins June 9.

Thursday, June 16 (4-4:45 p.m.) Ready, Set, Kindergarten! – Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to rotate through skill stations in preparation for making the leap into Kindergarten. Registration begins June 9.

Thursday, June 16 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) and Saturday, June 25 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7. Registration opens one week before each session.

Fridays, June 17 and 24 (9:30-10 a.m.) Summer Yoga with Ms. Jen – Calm your body, mind and spirit in this yoga class taught by Ms. Jen, certified Yoga instructor! Wear comfy clothes and bring your own mat or towel. Ages 2-6, siblings welcome. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, June 17 (10-10:45 a.m.) Reading, Rhythm, and Rainsticks – This adapted storytime explores music with rainsticks, rhythm sticks and more! For children with disabilities, ages 3-9, with a caregiver; siblings are welcome. This program will encourage gross and fine motor movements while playing with instruments and moving to music. Songs are a wonderful way to learn about language. This program is led by a librarian, not a therapist and is not a substitute for music or other therapy. Please register.

Friday, June 17 (1-3 p.m.) Movies @ Your Library – Enjoy a feature-length newly released movie or favorite family classic! Contact Youth Services for specific title. All ages. Registration begins June 10.

Saturday, June 18 (2-4 p.m.) Hand Sewing for Literacy – Learn basic sewing skills and create a sewn project while listening to a story with sewing as its central theme. Hand sewing helps kids develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, self-confidence, patience and focus – skills used in reading and writing. Caregivers are encouraged to stay for the program to learn the sewing techniques and assist their child(ren). Younger siblings are welcome and a simple stitching project will be available for them. Grades K-2. Registration begins June 11.
