Never Forget: Avon Salutes Patriot Day

Avon High trumpet player Jack Miller, a senior, sounds ‘Taps’ at the Avon Veteran’s Memorial in a Patriot Day salute during ceremonies this week. Avon city officials, police and firefighters and religious leaders joined to honor those who were lost in the deadly attacks 21 years ago. “We must always remember the sacrifices of those who run into danger instead of running away from it,” remarked Mayor Bryan Jensen.

The City of Avon gathered for a solemn Patriot Day ceremony Monday morning at the Veteran’s Memorial behind the post office.

It was an opportunity for the community to pause and reflect on the events of 9-11-01 that devastated the lives of many Americans and their families.

Mayor Bryan Jensen delivered a short address, reminding all of the importance of those safety personnel who sacrificed their lives that day, and those who put their lives on the line every day in service to our communities.

“To me, if you run toward gunfire, you’re a hero….if you run toward a fire, you’re a hero,” he said.

The observance included a performance of the National Anthem by the Avon High choir, the solemn ringing of the fire bell and a bagpipe tribute.

The community then adjourned for a day of reflection and deeper appreciation for the values and freedom our country offers.
