The Avon High football team reclaimed the Silver Rail trophy with a 42-21 win at arch-rival Avon Lake last Friday.
The hard-fought game saw the Eagles take momentum after a 14-14 halftime tie and pull away after the intermission with 21 unanswered points. Both teams stand at 3-1 after the decision.
Highlights were many for both teams. Avon running back Jakorion Caffey lodged 86 yards on 19 carries while scoring twice. He also caught two passes for 47 yards. Quarterback Sam DeTillio finished with 279 yards on 16 of 24 passing with 2 touchdowns and two picks. He also ran the ball 9 times for 44 very important yards. Cam Santee gathered in 4 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Holbrook added two catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. Drew Lindsay also had two catches for 68 yards.
For Avon Lake, the Shoremen ran out of gas in the second half on the warm evening. Wade Nelson had 101 yards rushing on 9 carries with an electrifying 81 yard touchdown. He also stung Avon with a 98-yard kickoff return for AL’s only second half points. Quarterback Jeremy Dzik was 14-19 passing for 149 He was picked off once – a crucial pick by Tommy Ptacek – and had a 12-yard touchdown to Luke Stuewe. Dzik also ran the ball 6 times for 39 yards in the loss.
In the end, it was another classic in this storied rivalry. Will they meet again in the playoffs? Time will tell.
