Happy 105th, George Chanter!

George Chanter, a resident at Concord Reserve at 2115 Dover Center in Westlake, marked an incredible milestone last week as he celebrated his 105th birthday.

Friends, family, staff and guests gathered as George, surrounded by festive birthday signs, celebrated with pizza and cake.

“We topped off Dad’s significant birthday that evening with dinner at Pier W,” reported his daughter, Susan Mulhern, a Westlake resident. “He continued to enjoy himself and the attention he received.”

George greeted all the attention he received with gratitude and grace. When asked for his secret to longevity, he replied, “No secret, really. I just let the math take care of itself.”

George is very sharp for a person of any age. He is intelligent; a voracious reader who somehow manages to retain almost everything he reads. He loves history, English and American, and in particular the Civil War. He also enjoys any kind of music, including opera and Broadway musicals.

Since moving to Cleveland from Ontario Canada in 1955, George has been an Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He also enjoys the Cleveland professional teams.

George was a machinist by trade. When he retired, he took up woodworking. He thoroughly enjoyed this hobby, gifting family members with wooden boxes, beautiful furniture shelving, intricate jewelry boxes and his pride and joy -a roll-top desk!

“Dad was also a flower and vegetable gardener using his own compost. His flower specialties were iris and daylilies,” says Susan. “It is hard to know what his secret is as far as longevity is concerned. He is kind, soft-spoken, possesses a positive attitude, and seldom complains.”

George has two children, Susan Mulhern and Ted Chanter. He has six grandchildren, one deceased, and fourteen great grandchildren. He was married to the love of his life Lois for 64 years before her passing in 2007.
