View the Partial Solar Eclipse at Westlake Porter Public Library

Westlake Porter Public Library will celebrate the upcoming partial solar eclipse with programs, including Shadows and Sunshine: Exploring the Eclipse, an Eclipse Viewing Party, and 2017 Solar Eclipse Viewing with Google Cardboard. The eclipse will occur on October 14 starting at 11:49 a.m., be at totality at 1:07 p.m. and end at 2:28 p.m.

Shadows and Sunshine will take place on Friday, October 13, with two different sessions: a 1-1:45 p.m. session for ages 4-6 (up to kindergarten) and one at 2-2:45 p.m. for Grades 1 and 2. At both, children will learn about the eclipse and make a pinhole camera obscura (a device used to safely view an eclipse) out of a cereal box. Registration begins October 6.

The Eclipse viewing party will be on Saturday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. All ages will be able to observe the partial eclipse, make a pinhole viewer, participate in trivia contests and view livestream feeds. Eclipse glasses will be provided to those who register for them. Drop-ins are welcome, but glasses may not be available.

Also on Saturday, October 14, from 10-11 a.m., participants can take a look back at the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse, which stretched across the U.S. and beyond. We’ll be using Google Cardboard, so please bring a smartphone. Registration is required for this event, which is also for all ages.
