Westlake Porter Public Library’s March Calendar of Events

Saturday, March 1 (10-11 a.m.) Grounds for Discussion: Coffee with Rising Star’s Brandon Riggs – Spend your Saturday sipping coffee as you learn about the cultural aspects around harvesting, growing and operating a local coffee roasting facility in Cleveland. Please register.

Saturdays, March 1, 15 and 22 (10:30-11 a.m.) Wednesdays, March 12 and 26 (7-7:30 p.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Children are welcome to wear their pajamas and bring along a stuffed animal! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Sunday, March 2 (2-2:45 p.m.) Let’s Draw Seussical Creatures! – Dr. Seuss, otherwise known as Theodore Geisel, has become a name synonymous with wacky rhyming picture books and eccentric pieces of artwork. Learn to draw just a few of Dr. Seuss’ iconic and imaginative creatures from one of WPPL’s artists! Grades 1-4. Registration begins February 23.

Sunday, March 2 (2-4 p.m.) Tapestry Weaving: You and Me – Learn the basics of weaving while experimenting with color and texture as you collaborate on a single woven project. Each child will receive a loom to keep. This program is for an adult with a child currently enrolled in grades 3 through 5. Registration begins February 23.

Monday, March 3 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Marvelous March Craft Kit Pick Up – Celebrate March with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7. Kits are available until Sunday, March 9, unless other arrangements are made. Registration begins February 24.

Mondays, March 3 and 24 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Mondays, March 3, 10 and 24 (3-5 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons. Video games, board games, snacks and more! No registration necessary. Grades 7-12.

Monday, March 3 (7-8 p.m.) Strengthening Your Nest Egg – Alex Menassa, MT, CPA, JD, Senior Financial Planner of Szarka Financial presents strategies to navigate current markets and avoid common traps in retirement. Please register.

Tuesday, March 4 (2-3 p.m.) 3D Small Wood Egg Acrylic Painting – Learn to paint on wood using acrylic paint. Paint a small blue and white egg. All supplies provided. You must be 16 years of age or older. Registration begins February 25.

Tuesday, March 4 (2-4 p.m.) Jewelry Workshop with Evelyn – Bring your jewelry projects, pieces in need of repair, or old jewelry in need of updating. Evelyn will be there with findings to assist you. Registration begins January 28.

Tuesday, March 4 (4-5 p.m.) Easy Origami – Drop in and learn some simple origami. No registration required. Grades 3-6.

Tuesdays, March 4 and 18 (5-6 p.m.) Roblox Arcade (Virtual) – Join us in the Roblox Arcade! We have private servers set up for tweens in grades 4-6 to enjoy some of the most popular games. Registration begins one week before each session.

Tuesday, March 4 (6-7:30 p.m.) Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins February 25.

Tuesday, March 4 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum & Women In History: An Evening with Eleanor Roosevelt – Join Ruth Pangrace as she presents a dramatic interpretation of Mrs. Roosevelt. Please register.

Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (3-4:30 p.m.) Teen Snacktivity – Who says you can’t play with your food? On Wednesdays after school, drop by the Teen Lounge for a snack related activity. Enjoy the process then eat the results. Grades 6-12.

Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (5-6 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Sign up starts at 4:30 p.m. Grades K-4.

Monday, March 5 (6-8:30 p.m.) Heartsaver CPR/AED – Get certified for adult, child and infant CPR and AED. Class led by certified instructors from UH St. John Medical Center. Email account required. Participants under the age of 14 must have a parent or legal guardian with them in class. Please register.

Wednesday, March 5 (7-8 p.m.) Honoring St. Patrick’s Day – Dr. Joel Keller, “The Doc of Rock” brings together an entertaining presentation consisting of good-natured Irish jokes, one-liners, cartoon, songs, music, and even Irish dance!  Come celebrate the Irish culture, whether you’re Irish or just wish you were! No registration required.

Friday, March 7 (4–4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: The Science of Wild Weather – Join Mrs. K as we explore the science of wild weather. Spring can bring anything from wind, ice and snow to tornadoes. For ages 4-6, up to kindergarten. Registration begins February 28.

Saturday, March 8 (11 a.m.-Noon) Self-Reflection Craft: Paint a Mirror! – Personalize a handheld mirror and learn about Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist known for self-portraits and lifelong disability. For elementary children with disabilities and typical peers. Please register each child making a craft. Please wear clothes appropriate for painting and crafting. Grades 2-7. Registration begins March 1.

Saturday, March 8 (2-4 p.m.) Make It, Take It! – Stop by Youth Services to complete a featured craft. While supplies last. PreK-Grade 2. No registration required.

Saturday, March 8 (3-4 p.m.) Illustration Creation – Learn about a featured illustrator and then create a project inspired by their art. Grades 1-3. This month’s artist is Adam Rex. Registration begins March 1.

Sunday, March 9 (2-3 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore the works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 4-6. This month’s artist is Corita Kent. Registration begins March 2.

Monday, March 10 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Draw What Draws You to Porter Library – What’s your favorite part of visiting WPPL? All ages are invited to submit a drawing of what draws you to WPPL to be displayed on the library’s newly renovated second floor during National Library Week.

Monday, March 10 (10–10:30 a.m.) Music Monday – Develop pre-reading skills with music, movement and rhythm through stories, songs and rhymes. Ages 2-6. No registration required.

Monday, March 10 (7-8 p.m.) Estate Planning – Have you created an estate plan for your family? An effective estate plan can help ensure that your family’s financial needs will be taken care of, and that your personal wishes will be carried out in the manner you intended. Presented by Dave Herwerden of WestPoint Wealth Management, LLC and Matthew M. Nee of Nee Law Firm. Please register.

Tuesday, March 11 (6-7:30 p.m.) You & Me Printmaking – Create and print your own design with the linocut technique. This program is for an adult with an accompanying teen or tween. Adults, please register yourself and list the youth’s name separately. Grades 7-12. Registration begins March 4.

Tuesday March 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “Hang the Moon” by Jeannette Walls. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option, you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Tuesday, March 11 (7-8 p.m.) Let’s Talk! Spanish Language Social Hour (¡Hablemos! Hora social en Español) – Meet other fluent Spanish speakers for informal conversation. Light refreshments provided. Enjoy self-directed conversation and camaraderie. Those attending should be comfortable holding a conversation in the language. Caregivers are welcome to bring their children and can participate in conversation while supervising their child(ren). Please register.

Tuesday, March 12 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Dan Heath, “Reset: How to Change What’s Not Working” – Join us for an enlightening conversation with this bestselling author as he talks with us about his newest book. Please register.

Wednesday, March 12 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club: Our Tenth Anniversary! – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Wednesday, March 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “How to Give Up Plastic” by Will McCallum. An accessible guide to the changes we can all make – small and large – to rid our lives of disposable plastic and clean up the world’s oceans. Please register.

Thursdays, March 13 and 27 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursday, March 13 (7-8 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is “A Bakery in Paris” by Aimee K. Runyon. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Friday, March 14 (4-5 p.m.) and Sunday, March 23 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Saturday, March 15 (10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) SAT Practice Test – Want to get in some practice before taking the SAT? Sylvan Learning will host a simulated version of the test to help students prepare. Computers will be provided. Bring your own calculator. Grades 7-12. Results session will take place on March 22. Registration begins March 8.

Sunday, March 16 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – Open playtime for children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Monday, March 17 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Kinder Club Kit Pick-Up – Each bag will contain a variety of early literacy concepts that will be featured on our Kinder Club Blog. Ages 4-6. Registration begins March 10. Kits are available until Monday, March 24 unless other arrangements are made.

Monday, March 17 (1-2 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – This month we’ll discuss “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?” by Eric Powell. Please register.

Tuesday, March 18 (6-7:30 p.m.) Teen Anime Club – Are you a teen who loves anime and manga? Watch a few episodes, play games, and have fun with your friends at Teen Anime Club! Grades 7-12. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, March 18 (6-8 p.m.) Craft Club – Join us at our craft club meeting! Bring a craft and hang out with members of the community. All crafts and skill levels welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 18 (6:30-7:30 p.m.) Dealing with Pain and Arthritis – Learn ways to manage pain and arthritis from Dr. Gina Croft, PT, DPT. Pain can be complex and personal.  Learn strategies that restore movement and help your body function better. Please register.

Tuesday, March 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) A General History of Cleveland – 1796 to the Present – Doug Imhoff will take a “trip down memory lane” to look at the history of Cleveland, including its business, political, sports, and entertainment history. Please register.

Wednesday, March 19 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The Wednesday Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month. This month’s title is “The Wager: A tale of a Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder” by David Grann. No registration required.

Wednesday, March 19 (6:30-8 p.m.) Sewing 101: Make Your Own Cat Toy! – Sew your own one-of-a-kind cat toy! Makerspace staff will guide you through a beginner sewing pattern to create your own one-of-a-kind cat toy! We will utilize both hand and machine sewing techniques. For teens and adults.

Thursday, March 20 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Clara Bingham, “The Movement” – Join us for a transformative conversation with the award-winning journalist and author as she chats with us about her new book, “The Movement: How Women’s Liberation Transformed America, 1963-1973” Please register.

Thursday, March 20 (7-7:45 p.m.) Inclusion Craft for Adults – Get crafty with us or at home! Register starting March 13 and stop in to complete a craft with adults of all abilities. Can’t make it in? Register for a kit. For adults with disabilities and their peers. Registration begins March 13.

Saturday, March 22 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun – This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft (if desired), and play a Pokémon Bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards. Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 25 (10-11:30 a.m.) Customizing Your Grant Proposal – This class focuses on targeting requests toward specific funders and revising your requests to focus the fit. We encourage each participant to prepare for class by bringing an existing or draft LOI or grant proposal for which you would like to seek foundation funding. We will provide in-class, real-time feedback on your revisions. Presented by David Holmes of Candid. Registration begins February 25.

Wednesday, March 26 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adult Stories and Crafts – Adults with disabilities are invited to laugh, sing and listen to stories, along with a craft or a coloring page. Registration begins March 19.

Wednesday, March 26 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Spring is Here Edition – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! Age 16 and up welcome. Please register.

Wednesday, March 26 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Jennifer Weiner – “The Breakaway” – You’re invited to a glimmering conversation with the “New York Times” bestselling author as we chat about the emotional dept of her books that have been inspiring readers toward self-discovery for decades. Please register.

Thursday, March 27 (3-4 p.m.) Digital Transfer Stations: Analog to Digital – Did you know you could digitize your old, physical media at the library? Attend this info session to learn about our Maker Stations and how they can help you convert your records, slides, VHS, cassette tapes and more into modern, compatible formats. Registration begins March 20.

Friday, March 28 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) Adapted Pottery Class – A teacher from Quill Pottery of Bay Village and a Facilitator from Cuyahoga Board of DD will lead participants in making unique pottery in a hands-on workshop. Please register each adult participant separately. Other adults (caregivers or drivers, for example) need not register. Participants will be contacted at the phone number or email address given upon registration to pick up their finished pieces at the library after the program. We may get messy, so dress accordingly! Monday, March 31 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Tween Craft Kit Pick Up – Register beginning March 24, then stop by Youth Services starting at 9 a.m. to pick up your kit. Grades 5-7.
