Westlake Porter Public Library’s Annual Steam Week Returns July 20-24

Westlake Porter Public Library’s annual STEAM Week will take place July 20-24. STEAM Week focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math in a variety of programs and activities that help children prepare for the coming school year. All week long the library will feature blog posts on its website about the STEAM disciplines, as well as a variety of programs for all ages.

The schedule includes:

MONDAY, JULY 20

Computer Quest – Come on down to the Computer Quest arcade! Practice your mouse and keyboard skills by playing computer games. Earn tickets based on your high scores and redeem them for prizes! For grades 3-6. Registration begins July 13. Monday, July 20 (2-3 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY, JULY 22

Teen Design Day: 3D Printing – Receive a prototype and try your hand at making a model in Tinkercad! Participants must have a library card and a user agreement signed by a parent on file. For ages 11-15. Wednesday, July 22 (2-4 p.m.)

3D Photography: Capturing the Depth Around Us – Learn about the many ways to take, display, and view 3D photographs from the members of the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society. Wednesday, July 22 (7-8:30 p.m.)

THURSDAY, JULY 23

WPPL’s Annual Egg Drop – Celebrate engineering during STEAM week with your egg protector design for the egg drop. Building starts at 11 a.m. in the Porter Room. Join us at noon for the official egg drop. Recommended for all ages. No registration required. Thursday, July 23 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.)

FRIDAY, JULY 24

Engineering Challenge: Skyscrapers – Students will transform into engineers when they are challenged to build a tower out of simple paper that can hold weight. Presented by the Great Lakes Science Center. Registration begins June 24. For grades 1 and 2. Friday, July 24 (11-11:45 a.m.)

Jumping Jitterbugs – Students will explore how circuits and electricity work together while designing and creating their own Jumping Jitterbug “bot” to take home. Presented by the Great Lakes Science Center. Please register each child separately. This program is only for students entering grades 3, 4, or 5 in the fall. Registration begins June 24. Friday, July 24 (1-1:45 p.m.)
