Keeping students engaged in reading over the summer can be a challenge. As a way to promote reading while school is out, Redwood Elementary School, 32967 Redwood Blvd., students were challenged throughout the summer to read and the winners receive a “Lunch of a Lifetime.” After all their hard work this summer, the “Lunch of a Lifetime” event took place Wednesday, Sept. 23 and featured a limo ride and lunch.
“We select the top reader at each grade level – minutes read and randomly select a student at each grade level that participated in the challenge,” said T.J. Ebert, Redwood Elementary principal. “The students got calendars and they tracked minutes read each day over the summer. The winners got a ‘Lunch of a Lifetime.’ They were picked up from school, have a picnic at a local park, ice cream, and taken back to school in the limo with me.”
The limo arrived at Redwood Elementary School, 32967 Redwood Blvd., at 11 a.m. The limo was donated by Safe and Reliable Limo and lunch was donated by Marco’s Pizza. Divine Scoops, 140 Lear Road, Avon Lake, opened up shop at 12:15 p.m. for the students to come in and pick out a scoop of ice cream. The limo returned to Redwood Elementary at 1 p.m.
Fun facts:
- Redwood students read 175,631 minutes over the summer – averages 2,252 minutes read a day
- They read 2,927 hours which equates to 450 school days
- 90 minutes in a World Cup soccer game – Redwood would have read for 1,951 world cup games
