What a year it has been for the Westlake High girls basketball team! With a 39-21 win over Avon last Friday night, the Lady Demons captured a District championship, improved to 22-2 on the year and advanced to this week’s Regional at Norwalk as part of the OHSAA’s Sweet 16!
Westlake will meet Toledo Whitmer Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in a Regional semifinals match-up.
Whitmer, second seed in the Toledo District, upset top-seeded Toledo Notre Dame on Saturday on the strength of a 22-foot three-pointer with just 5 seconds left to improve to 21-6.
The Tuesday winner of the Westlake-Whitmer game will advance to the regional finals on Saturday at a site to be announced against the winner of Tuesday’s other Regional semifinal that pits Magnificat vs. Wadsworth at North Royalton High.
For Westlake, this has been a stellar season. Coach Chip Weiss’s Lady Demons play intense, aggressive defense and aren’t afraid to challenge bigger teams in the lane.
Westlake posted an 18-2 record in the regular season and defeated Southwestern Conference powers Berea-Midpark and Amherst enroute to winning the SWC title before moving on to claim sectional and district crowns. Friday’s win over Avon marked the third time this year that Westlake has defeated the Eagles, a solid team that ends the season with a 17-6 mark.
