Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center Opens in Westlake

Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC) has proudly opened a new office in Westlake.

This resource brings a remarkable organization to the West Shore. Founded in 1921, CHSC has a long history of helping individuals with communication challenges become independent members of the Greater Cleveland Community.

“For nearly 100 years, Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center has been the premier provider of assistance to those who are hard of hearing, have difficulty speaking, are deaf, need a sign-language interpreter, have had a stroke or severe brain injury, or have other language or literacy delays and disorders,” reports Executive Director Jennell C. Vick. “Our vision is a community where every individual communicates effectively.”

CHSC started with the simple mission of providing lip-reading classes for adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. It was launched in 1921 by Helen Newell Garfield, daughter-in-law of President James Garfield, who lost her hearing as a young woman.

Hearing Services

CHSC diagnostic hearing testing is thorough and detailed. Their team of audiologists is experienced in working with people of all ages – from infants to seniors – all with unique needs. They offer a wide selection of hearing aid products and services. In addition to hearing testing, product selection and follow-up appointments, they also offer speech and language therapies and aural rehabilitation to help you get the best benefit from your hearing aids.

Speech Services

Through individual and/or group therapy, adult clients receive treatment from highly skilled speech language pathologists. Clients may have developmental delays or communication problems frequently associated with medical conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, stroke or progressive central nervous system diseases (such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.).

“We are the nation’s oldest hearing and speech center and Northeast Ohio’s only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to serving those with special communication needs,” adds Vick. “CHSC consistently serves thousands of children and adults each year through the following programs and services: Hearing, Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Speech-Language and Learning. The Center also oversees the management of the Early Intervention Program.

Expansion of CHSC services would not be possible without the generous philanthropy of the community, including Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern Ohio, who provided funding for the Westlake office. A generous bequest to CHSC from Mary Jane Davis Hartwell provided the resources that have enabled the agency to serve more children and adults across Cuyahoga County.
