Students Knitting Items to Help the Homeless

As schools across the area host a variety of clothing, food and toy collections this holiday season, several fifth-grade students at Avon Heritage Elementary School are giving items that are very personal and special, hand-knitted hats, scarves, and headbands will be given to a local homeless shelter in Lorain. Approximately 25 students meet several days a week during their recess time to learn the skill and make items for the shelter. The group has been meeting for the past few months. At first, they made gifts for family, friends, etc. But now with the holidays approaching, the students will be adding the knitted items to the holiday trees that adorn the school for the annual holiday collection.

The students are enjoying learning a new skill and helping those in need. Eckert has been teaching/assisting students knitting for 15 years. She enjoys connecting with the students on a more social level during their time knitting together.
