Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, May 1 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesday, May 1 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 29 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, May 3 (4-5 p.m.) Got Science? – Join us as we delve into the world of science. This month’s topic: Catapults! Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins April 26.

Saturday, May 4 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, May 4 (2-3 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Saturday, May 4 (3:30-5 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab: Star Wars STEAM Activities – Grades 3-5. Registration begins April 27.

Sunday, May 5 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Blaire Wilson – 2019 Girl of the Year Blaire Wilson used her creativity to connect with others. We’ll play games and make a theme-related craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins April 28.

Mondays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 (2-3:30 p.m.) Conversational Spanish – Spanish is the most popular second language learned in the United States. Please join us to learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation with an expert instructor. You’re sure to be speaking the romance language fluently in no time. No registration required.

Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club: Java – This 10-week course for grades 5-6 will teach the basics of Java, one of the most popular programming languages. Space is limited for each weekly session. Please try to attend all 10 sessions. Please register.

Tuesday, May 7 (7-8:30 p.m.) Lincoln’s Last Great Debate: Lincoln’s Confrontation with Jefferson Davis at Hampton Roads – Join local historian/storyteller Mel Maurer in this three person play which imagines that Lincoln and Davis came together at a peace conference at Hampton Roads in 1865. They are asked questions by a reporter and, in the course of answering them, debate policies and the war. Please register.

Wednesday, May 8 (7-7:30 p.m.) Mix-It-Up! – Let’s mix it up with flowers and fun spring activities! We’ll be getting messy so be sure and wear play clothes! Ages 4-6. Registration begins May 1.

Thursday, May 9 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’Music Therapy & More^SM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Join us for a hands-on program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. Each session is 30 minutes. Saturday, May 11 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) ACT Practice Exam – Be the most prepared you can be for the actual test with our ACT practice exam. Please come prepared with two #2 pencils and a calculator. Grades 9-12. Registration begins May 4.

Saturday, May 11 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, Wi-Fi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Saturday, May 11 (10:30 -11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturdays, May 11 and 25 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Sunday, May 12 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Monday, May 13 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration necessary. Namaste!

Monday, May 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Be Washington – Step into the shoes of our first commander-in-chief in this interactive game. All ages welcome. Please register.

Tuesday, May 14 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Completing Job Applications Plus – Learn how to handle questions on an application so that yours is noticed and read. Learn about keywords that may be used to screen candidates in or out and how to determine what the employer is really looking for. We will discuss both online applications and the few types of paper applications you may run into. No registration required.

Tuesday, May 14 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In May we’ll discuss The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe.

Tuesday, May 14 (7-8:45 p.m.) Westlake Westshore Arts Council – Andrea Chevalier from the International Conservation Association (ICA) will present a lecture about the artwork, architectural and historical conservation on the west side of Cleveland. No registration required.

Wednesday, May 15 (6:30-8:45 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogical Society – Ohio Genealogical Society Trustee Mary Milne Jamba presents DNA Testing and How to Use Your Results to Find Relatives.

Thursday, May 16 (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) Living in the Digital World Senior Expo – Join our staff for the 3rd annual Expo to learn about the different resources and opportunities that are available for older adults. The event is at the Don Umerley Civic Center in Rocky River, sponsored by the Center for Aging in the Digital World. No registration necessary.

Thursday, May 16 – Preschool session (6:30 p.m.) and Friday, May 17 – Preschool session (9:30 a.m.) and Toddler Session (11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Teach Me to Play^SM – A play-based program for families and their children (Toddler: ages 18 months-2 years and Preschool: ages 3-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Diverse opportunities for learning are provided, with an emphasis on facilitating communication, practicing social interactions and responding to behaviors in a positive way. Each themed session offers a variety of engaging individual, small and whole group activities. The staff coaches families, demonstrates and suggests strategies, responds to questions and provides resources. The program is led by an experienced Early Intervention Specialist and Speech-Language Pathologist. Saturday, May 18 (2-3:30 p.m.) Beautifying Your Garden – Come and see how to add color, texture and form to your garden with top performing annuals and perennials. These beauties can benefit our butterflies and pollinators while filling a variety of garden niches. Learn how to install and maintain these plants as part of your spring and summer landscape. Monday, May 20 (1-3 p.m.) Ask the Expert: Managing Cash Flow – Industry experts on the subject of managing cash flow for a start-up business, existing business or a non-profit will be here to answer your questions. Monday, May 20 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: Optimizing Retirement Income with Social Security and Medicare – Learn how to optimize your Social Security retirement income and Medicare retirement benefits. Wednesday, May 22 (10-11:30 a.m.) Researching Your Roots – This class is an introduction to Ancestry.com as well as other online resources that can be used to research your family. Bring the names and dates of relatives that you do know. This class allows time for individual research during class. Please register.

Wednesday, May 22 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The May selection is The President is Missing by James Patterson.

Wednesday, May 22 (3:45-5 p.m.) Tween Scene – Drop in after school to play board games and video games with your friends. Snacks will be provided. For students in grades 5-6. No registration required.

Wednesday, May 22 (7-8:30 p.m.) The Music of Birdsong: Sorting Out the Singers in the Chorus – Bird song is music, and the techniques used in ear training and music appreciation classes can provide valuable tools for identification of birds and their repertoire. We’ll also notice that not all birds sing from the same stages and they also sing in different ensembles. Then the real fun begins: learning the meanings of those songs and observing interactions in the avian musical drama, and sharing the musical stories with others. Please register.

Thursday, May 23 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – What is coding? Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. The class focus is on HTML and CSS. Please register.

Thursday, May 23 (Noon-1:30 p.m.) Small Business Lunch & Learn: Business Law – This seminar will cover the legal topics that most entrepreneurs and business owners will come across in the start-up and running of his/her business. This seminar will cover business start-up issues, doing business with a partner, lease review, general contract matters and general intellectual property issues. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions that pertain to his/her business. Please register.

Thursday, May 30 (6-8:45 p.m.) First Aid – The Heartsaver® First Aid course is designed to prepare students to provide first aid in a variety of injury and other emergency situations in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Registration begins May 1. Topics include: first aid basics • illnesses and medical emergencies, including stroke, seizure, and allergic reactions • external bleeding • internal bleeding • head, neck, and spinal injuries • broken bones, sprains, and burns • bites and stings • heat stroke and hypothermia • poison • illness and injury prevention
