Bay STEM Camp Welcomes Special Teachers

Not many sixth-grader campers get to learn from their Mayor, but Bay Village Mayor Paul Koomar was one of the special guests at this year’s Bay Schools STEM Camp.

The STEM Camp was for rising sixth graders and taught by sixth-grade teachers Mark Kevesdy and Lisa Gilmore. The overall topic was Environmental Studies and Sustainability, and campers were fortunate to have four exceptional contributors who enriched our students’ learning experience.

Mayor Koomar visited students to discuss the Bay Point plans and the equalization tank plans. His presentation was incredibly informative, offering insights into the city’s future developments and their impact on the community. The students were particularly inspired by his dedication to enhancing Bay Village and appreciated learning about these significant projects.

Laura Crabb generously offered two garden plots to students and delivered a captivating presentation on gardening and sustainability. The students were deeply engaged, learning about the importance of sustainable practices in gardening. They have been actively working on their garden plots, which continue to thrive, and they take great pride in their progress.

Anne Gilmore Orin, a master gardener, assisted at the community garden with planning and educating the students on different plant species and how to care for them. Her expertise and guidance were invaluable, helping the students understand the intricacies of gardening and plant care.

Greg Benedict presented on Nurdura products, highlighting their innovative building materials and engaging the students with building challenges. His presentation was a hit, as the students enjoyed the hands-on learning experience and seeing the project on-site. They were thrilled to witness the continued developments and understand the real-world applications of the concepts they were studying.

Each of these contributions provided students with a unique perspective on environmental sustainability and engineering. The efforts of these presenters and contributors have sparked a deeper interest in STEM fields and have provided the students with a valuable, hands-on learning experience. They have gained valuable knowledge and a greater appreciation for the importance of sustainability in our community.
