Bay Fire Chief Chris Lyons: Stay Fire Safe This Halloween

An important message from Fire Chief Chris Lyons – Fires and Burns are truly SCARY…Stay Fire Safe This Halloween!

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are more than 10,000 fires during the three-day period around Halloween, annually causing 25 deaths, 125 injuries and $83 million in property loss. Please help keep Bay Village safe during Halloween by following these safety tips:

– Costumes: Look for materials that won’t easily catch fire if they come in contact with heat or flame and stay away from costumes with billowing or long-trailing fabric that can cause a child to trip.

– Visibility: Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry, and if they’re wearing a mask, be sure the eye holes are large enough to clearly see.

– Flammable Decor: Keep décor far away from heat or flame, including light bulbs and heaters, dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable.

– Candles/Jack-o-Lanterns: It’s safest to use a glow stick or battery-operated candle in jack-o-lanterns. If using real candles use extreme caution, keep them well attended at all times and avoid placing them in high traffic areas or where they are accessible to children.

– Exits: Keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

– Photoelectric smoke alarms should be located on every floor and in each bedroom and kept in working condition.
