Celebrate Comic Books Day at Westlake Porter Public Library

Comic book and graphic novel fans of all ages are invited to Celebrate Comic Books Day on Saturday, May 2, at Westlake Porter Public Library. Visitors can pick up free comic books in the lobby while supplies last and enjoy several activities throughout the day, including taking selfies with popular comic book figures.

Local creator Mel Maurer lends his character creations to the library annually for a month every spring for patrons to admire and enjoy. For the past eleven years, Mr. Maurer has been building this collection of characters out of different types of materials. He encourages patrons to take selfies with his creations.

Aspiring comic book artists can learn how to create their own comic books during a drop-in session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They can even learn how to make buttons from their drawings. Library staff will be on hand with templates and practical advice.

In addition, participants can enter to win 3D-printed characters courtesy of the library’s Makerspace. Those who come in comic-themed costumes will score an additional raffle entry.

The celebration is in recognition Free Comic Books Day and Comic Giveaway Day, annual nationwide events that advocate the reading and appreciation of comic books and graphic novels. For more information, visit the library’s website at westlakelibrary.org.
