June Events at Westlake Porter Public Library

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s June, 2018 calendar of events:

Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 16 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and Monday, June 11 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturday, June 2 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturdays, June 2 & 16 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego^® and Duplo^® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Monday, June 4 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Mondays June 4, 18 and 25 (4-5 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 3-8.

Tuesday, June 5 (11 a.m.-Noon) Crafty Adults – Create art of your own based on the work of a famous artist or holiday. Specifically for ages 8 and up with developmental or intellectual disabilities. No registration required.

Tuesday, June 5 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories: Donuts and Dogs – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K as we learn why dogs love donuts through quiet stories, songs and fingerplays. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Wednesday, June 6 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20 and 27 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with one of the reading therapy dogs! Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Wednesdays, June 6 and 27 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us as we explore the classics of horror, science fiction, and suspense! Children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, June 7 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursdays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, June 8 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Got Science? – Join us for a fun afternoon as we explore beach activities and experiments. Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins June 1.

Saturday, June 9 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, June 9 (1:30-2:30 p.m.) Teen Taste Test Challenge – Taste Test Challenge! Can you taste the difference between store brand and name brand cookies, soda and other snacks? Can you guess different flavors of chips just by taste alone? Put your taste buds to the test. *Program may not be suitable for those with food allergies. Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 2.

Saturday, June 9 (2-3 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s new 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print.

Saturday, June 9 (4-5:30 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – This month’s topic: Good Vibrations! Experiment with sound and technology. Grades 3-5. Registration begins June 2.

Sunday, June 10 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Kaya – Kaya is a Native American girl of the Nez Perce tribe. She is an active girl who loves animals, especially horses. We will discuss what it was like to be a young girl during the 1760s, play games and do a craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins June 3.

Sunday, June 10 (3-4:15 p.m.) Elegance Ensemble Presents: Little Red Riding Hood – This children’s opera is for both the young and the young at heart! Come join us for a free, original staging of this classic fairy tale. Please register.

Monday, June 11 (2-3 p.m.) Coding for Kids – Learn computer programming by designing video games that can be shared and played with friends! Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 4.

Monday, June 11 (3-4 p.m.) Robotics for Kids – Pair up to create, program, and animate robots using LEGO bricks then experiment with other kids in friendly competitions. Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 4.

Monday, June 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Silhouette Cameo Vinyl Crafts – What else can the Silhouette Cameo do? It can also cut out custom designs on vinyl to transfer to craft projects. Bring something you’d like to apply a design to, and we’ll get to work! Please register.

Monday, June 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Westlake Westshore Arts Council – Westlake Westshore Arts Council presents an art lecture by Sean Crum called The Sculpture of Michelangelo: The Exaltation of the Human Nude. The art and life of the greatest sculptor of the Italian Renaissance is the subject of this lecture. Free and open to the public.

Tuesday, June 12 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, June 12 (1-2:30 p.m.) Medicare 101 – Are you eligible for Medicare? An OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) Community Liaison from the Ohio Department of Insurance will explain your Medicare benefits and options. Learn about Original Medicare Parts A, B & D, secondary insurance (Medigap), and Medicare Advantage plan options (Part C) at this informative presentation. Registration begins June 1.

Tuesday, June 12 (3-4 p.m.) Weiss Ratings Medigap Report Workshop – Weiss Ratings, a source for independent, unbiased financial strength ratings of insurance companies, offers a personalized Medigap Report with step-by-step guidance on how to select the best and most affordable Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan for your needs. Attend this open lab session to learn about this valuable tool and generate your report. Bring a flash drive to save your finished report. Registration begins June 1.

Tuesday, June 12 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In June we’ll discuss The Girl Who Wrote in Silk by Kelli Estes.

Wednesdays, June 13, 20 and 27 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, June 13 (2:30-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m.) Breakout: Back to the Future – Similar to an escape room, this breakout challenge is going to test your ability to work together to solve all the clues that’ll get you back to the future! Can you break out?! Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 6.

Wednesday, June 13 (7-7:45 p.m.) Mix-It-Up! – Let’s mix it up with balloons and paints in June and sand in July! Be sure to bring an old t-shirt or paint shirt in June. Ages 4-6. Registration begins June 6.

Thursday, June 14 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Sensation Stations – Engage your child’s senses by scooping, pouring and sorting a variety of materials. For children with special needs and their typical peers. Ages 3-6. No registration necessary.

Thursday, June 14 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month, a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read the article prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursdays, June 14, 21 and 28 (2-3:30 p.m.) Teen Crafts – Bring out your creativity every Thursday throughout the summer! Drop-in for a new craft each week. Grades 7-12. No registration necessary.

Thursday, June 14 (7-8:30 p.m.) Ornamental Trees for Your Garden – Trees make a beautiful addition to any garden, but some plants are better suited than others. Master Gardener Ann Chanon will present on the beautiful plants that will be just right for your yard or garden! Please register.

Friday, June 15 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Movies @ the Library! – Join us from 2-4 p.m. on Fridays for summer movie matinées. Rated PG. Registration begins one week before each session. June 15: The Inspiring story of the Pullman family, whose child, Auggie, is born with facial differences. When he enters school for the first time, his extraordinary journey unites his family, his school, and his community, and proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. June 22: After Ferdinand, a bull with a big heart, is mistaken for a dangerous beast; he is captured and torn from his home. Saturday, June 15 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Saturday, June 16 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) It’s Father’s Day at the Library! – Join us in the Youth Services Department for fun-filled Father’s Day crafts and activities. All ages. No registration required.

Saturday, June 16 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Monday, June 18 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses that imitate animals and nature. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, June 18 (1-3 p.m.) Gaming Tournament – Grab your controllers and prepare to see who can claim the top spot in our epic Mario Kart tournament! Snacks and board games also provided! Grades 4-6. Registration begins June 11.

Monday, June 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: K.I.S.S. System of Investing – Let seasoned investor and AAII (American Association of Individual Investors) Cleveland Chapter President Chuck Evans show you his simple system of investing and managing your savings. He will examine investing in a portfolio view and how he arrived at choosing this methodology. No advanced degree is required to implement his ideas successfully and handle these tasks yourself. Monday, June 18 (7-8 p.m.) Juvenile Court Services – Juvenile Court Judge Denise N. Rini will have an interactive presentation to discuss services that are provided by Juvenile Court. Topics covered will be: Safe Harbor Docket, Teen Drug Court and Teen Violence. Please register.

Tuesday, June 19 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, June 19 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Motivating Yourself to Life Success – Motivation is a crucial element in setting and attaining goals. It is necessary when making a transition or changing to something new. You can influence your own levels of motivation and self-control to be successful in your job or career with ideas learned here. Tuesdays, June 19-July 17 (3-4 p.m.) Summer Brain Games – Keep up your skills during summer vacation! Kids in grades 1-3 can drop in each week for grade-appropriate educational games. Teen volunteers and staff will be on hand to assist. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, June 19 (6:45-8:30 p.m.) League Park and Cleveland Sports History – For more than half a century, League Park was the center of the Cleveland sports scene and one of sports’ most important venues. Built for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League, the ballpark was home for the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Rams of the NFL and the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro Leagues. Come listen to local author Vince Guerrieri talk about this storied park. Please register.

Wednesday, June 20 (2-3 p.m.) Self Defense – The martial arts experts at Horizon ATA will teach us some self defense techniques and basics of conflict avoidance to help keep you safe. Please wear comfortable athletic attire and shoes. Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 13.

Wednesday, June 20 (6:30-8:45 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogical Society – Ohio Genealogical Society Trustee Dr. Deborah Abbott will speak on Cluster Genealogy: Finding Your Lost Ancestors.

Thursday, June 21 (10-10:45 a.m.) Signing Dr. Seuss – Participate in a lively reading of a Dr. Seuss classic with Bill Morgan, SignStage Artistic Manager of the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, and learn American Sign Language for words in the story. For children ages 3 1/2 – 7. No registration necessary.

Thursday, June 21 (2-5 p.m.) Classic Arcade Fun with Lego^® – Bricks4Kidz will help participants use Lego® to build all kinds of arcade-style games, including a marble run! Grades 3-5. Registration begins June 14.

Friday, June 22 (9:30-10 a.m.) My First Summer – Celebrate your baby’s first summer with a simple sunshine footprint craft. For babies age 0-18 months with a caregiver. Registration begins June 15.

Friday, June 22 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Saturday, June 23 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturday, June 23 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Sunday, June 24 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Monday, June 25 (1-3 p.m.) Super Smash Teen Tournament – We’re going head-to-head in an epic brawl! Test out your skills in Super Smash to see who will claim the top spot! Retro consoles, other video games, pizza, and snacks will be provided as well. Grades 7-12. No registration necessary.

Monday, June 25 (7-8 p.m.) Rockin’ WOW Magic Show – Tricky Max is a one-of-a-kind performer with a distinctive voice and comic energy. This magic show will be full of jokes, acts of astonishment, and oversized puppets to keep the laughter rolling. FREE tickets will be available on June 8. All ages. Limit of six tickets per adult, please.

Tuesday, June 26 (1:30-2:30 p.m.) Make a Mermaid or a Shark! – Quill Studio will help you make a cool mermaid or shark out of clay, which will then be fired off-site and returned with paints to complete at home. Grades 1-2. Registration begins June 19.

Tuesday, June 26 (2-3:30 p.m.) Travel Club: Pittsburgh – Come hear about all of the fun and interesting things to do in Pittsburgh. There’s more to the city than the Steelers! Please register.

Tuesday, June 26 (3-4 p.m.) Make a Fairy Door! – Quill Studio will help you make a cool fairy door out of clay, which will then be fired off-site and returned with paints to complete at home. Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 19.

Tuesday, June 26 (7-8 p.m.) Make a Buddha Bowl! – Work with clay while you socialize! Quill Studio will help you make a Buddha bowl, which is a wider medium-size bowl that’s perfect for soup, salad, or even ice cream. Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 19.

Wednesday, June 27 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The June selection is Miller’s Valley by Anna Quindlen.

Wednesday, June 27 (7-7:45 p.m.) Stuffed Animal Sleepover – Bring your favorite stuffed animal to the library for a sleepover! Drop-off begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 25 and ends at noon on Tuesday, June 26. Come to our storytime on June 27 to pick up your stuffed animal and see what happened while your friend was visiting the library! Ages 3-6. Registration begins June 18.

Thursday, June 28 (7-8 p.m.) Vitamins and Dietary Supplements – Do you wonder what supplements do and which ones you should take? Join us for this informative talk as noted medical lecturer and patient advocate Tom Strong removes the mystery about vitamins and supplements. Please register.

Friday, June 29 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday – Join Mrs. K as we test the buoyancy of different objects and make our own floating boat. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take home project. Ages 4-6. Please register.

Saturday, June 30 (2-2:45 p.m.) Porter Playtime Marching Band! – Hip, Hip, Parade! Come and join our Porter Playtime Marching Band! No experience necessary. All instruments provided! Ages 4-6. Registration begins June 23.
