Holy Trinity School seventh grader Chas Knittel correctly spelled “kuchen” and “zinnia” to win the The Chronicle Telegram’s preliminary spelling bee on March 16. Knittel outlasted the runner-up in the 23rd round to earn the victory.
Knittel gained entry into the preliminary bee, one of two hosted by The Chronicle, after winning the Holy Trinity School bee in February.
The victories did not come without hard work and preparation from Knittel and those around him. Mrs. Laura Waltos, the spelling bee advisor, describes Knittel as “self-motivated to work hard and reach his goal”.
The next step for Knittel is the District Final Bee on March 23 at Avon Middle School. This round will consist of 31 other seventh and eighth grade finalists from public, private, parochial and home schools in the The Chronicle’s readership area. The winner from this District Final will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee and represent the Educational Service Center Region 2 and The Chronicle in Washington D.C.
