Two years ago, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception on Stoney Ridge Road in Avon started to  offer an evening Mass geared to children in the school and parish each third Sunday of the month, September through June. Every Mass is celebrated by a priest from the Congregation of St. Joseph on Case Road, which ministers to the youth of the area.

Children are invited to participate through leading the congregation in readings during the liturgy. The Masses celebrated this year have invited children to St. Leonard Youth Retreat Center to have their backpacks blessed followed by a bonfire on the island located on the center’s grounds; and a “trunk-or-treat” at Avon St. Mary, where children collected bags of goodies, not just for themselves, but to donate to The Blessing House in Elyria.

This Sunday, November 17, the next Youth Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 2640 Stoney Ridge Road, Avon, at 6:00 pm. Immediately following, families will congregate in the school cafeteria to fill boxes with small toys, trinkets, and toiletries to distribute to children through Operation Christmas Child. Last year, twenty boxes were filled to the brim; this year, the parish hopes to fill more to send to the organization. Participants are requested to bring small items to donate, and those who are unable to attend may leave donations on the altar of St. Mary Church any time prior to the evening Mass. More information on items needed may be found by visiting samaritanspurse.org.
