Bay Village Police: Beware of Scam Phone Calls

Bay Village Police report\ that several city business have reported scam phone calls recently. On 12/12/2013,  a business owner at Bay Square called BVPD to report he had received a call from a male claiming he worked for the electric company.  The male stated the business was behind in their electric bills, and if they did not pay $500 immediately, their power would be turned off.  The owner thought the call was suspicious, and terminated the call.  He discovered his bills were paid, and the call was a scam.  Several businesses have reported similar phone calls recently.  BVPD advises residents to be very cautious of any calls from utility companies requesting payment over the phone.

 

Fraud Report

 

On 12/13/2013, at 1548 hrs, a Dover Center resident reported that her father was the victim of a fraud.  Someone had created a bank account in his name and redirected the direct deposit of his Social Security check.  Police are investigating.

 

Aggressive Behavior

 

On 12/13/2013, at 1141 hrs, a BVPD officer responded to Bay Square after numerous phone calls about a female who was acting aggressively, and appeared to have mental health issues.  Officer’s eventually located her in a shoe store.  Officers approached her and attempted to speak with her, but she became aggressive and attempted to walk away.  The 40 yoa female was taken into custody, and eventually transported to St. Vincent Hospital for an evaluation.

 

Miscellaneous blotter items

 

On 12/15/2013, at 1647 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Wolf Rd. near Parkside.  The officer checked the driver and passenger for warrants, and discovered that they both had active warrants.  The driver was arrested for a warrant from Brooklyn PD and the passenger was arrested for a warrant from North Olmsted.  They were transported to the respective agencies by BVPD.

 

On 12/14/2013, an East Oakland resident called BVPD on two occasions to complain about a neighbor who snow was blowing snow onto the caller’s property.  Officers responded and spoke to the parties involved.

 

On 12/12/2013, at 2330 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Lake Rd. near Eagle Cliff for a traffic violation.  After speaking with the 22 yoa male driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking.  Field sobriety test were conducted, and as a result, the driver was arrested for OVI.  He will face charges at RRMC.

 

On 12/11/2013, at 1544 hrs, BVPD officers were dispatched to a house in the 26000 block of Knickerbocker for a possible drug overdose.  Officer’s located a 21 yoa male in the backyard on a tire swing who was displaying signs of drug use.  A BVFD squad responded and transported the male to the hospital.

 

On 12/11/2013, at 0108 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Lake Rd. near Dover Center for a traffic violation.  After speaking with the 40 yoa female driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as a result, the driver was arrested for OVI.  An inventory of the vehicle turned up marijuana also.  She will face charges at RRMC.
