St. John Medical Center’s ‘For Ladies Only: Heart Disease Awareness’ was a huge success with more than 100 women in attendance last week at the Westlake Recreation Center.

The free, sold-out event was held on Thurs., Feb. 13. “We were very surprised how quickly the reservations came in to attend the event. This demonstrated as well as confirmed just how important this topic is to women,” stated Pam Hoch, SJMC Women’s Service Line Development Coordinator.

Those women who attended participated in a health fair which featured health screenings, CPR demonstration, wellness information pertaining to heart disease and expert cosmetic advice by Estee Lauder from Macy’s at Great Northern Mall.

The evening continued with a heart healthy light dinner followed by an informative presentation by cardiologist Lori Rusterholtz, MD.

Presented by St. John Medical Center’s ‘All About You’ program and the Westlake Recreation Center, the event discussed ways in which women can stay heart healthy.

According to Hoch, “In the United States, heart disease is responsible for one out of four female deaths and is the leading cause of death in women.” Hoch also noted that many heart attack symptoms are different in females versus males. It is not uncommon for women to experience a heart attack with little warning. Statistics show that when a heart attack occurs in a female it can more often prove fatal than in a male.

“St. John Medical Center is thankful the Westlake Recreation Center shares in our commitment to educate women on such an important topic,” said Hoch. “February is known as heart month and we wanted to showcase our cardiovascular services to the community in a enjoyable yet educational forum.”
