Dennis Bowers, 58, of Westlake travelled to Winfield, Kansas where he competed in the National Hammered Dulcimer championship on September 21st of this year.
Winfield is the home of the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival, held in the third week of September. The Festival attracts over 15,000 visitors each year who come to listen to five days of Bluegrass music and instrument competitions.
Bowers placed 2nd in the competition. He received a trophy and a new Hammered Dulcimer handcrafted by Mike Huddleson of Mike Huddleson Stringed Instruments.
In June, Bowers earned first place in the Mid-East Regional Hammered Dulcimer competition at the Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival in Coshocton, Ohio, which earned him a place in this year’s national competition at WInfield.
Together, Bowers and his wife Kaja Jensen make up the duo Denja, which performs American and Celtic traditional music in venues throughout Cleveland and the West suburbs. They can be heard the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Cravings Café in Rocky River.
