March Programs at Westlake Porter Library

If you’re looking for something to do in late March – that in-between time when it’s too early to get out in the yard and too late for winter activities – look no further that Westlake Porter Public Library. The Library has a slew of programs for adults lined up, including the Maker Club, Beginning Beekeeping, Looking for Lizzie, the 2015 Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Following are the details about each program:

Maker Club: MaKey MaKey

This month’s Maker Club will feature the MaKey MaKey, a device that can turn anything conductive- including fruits, vegetables, metal, and you- into a keyboard! Play a banana piano, a human drum set, and anything else you can think of! Please register. Registrants under 18 must bring a parent/guardian with them to sign the waiver. Wednesday, March 18 (7-8:30 p.m.)(7-8:30 p.m.)

Beginning Beekeeping

Join us to learn the basics to get you started as a beekeeper. You will learn how to set up your hive, how to move the bees into their home and how to feed them. There will be a detailed explanation and demonstration of the tools of the trade. Learn what to look for during hive inspections such as the various stages of brood and diseases that plague bees. “Looking for Lizzie: The True Story of an Ohio Madam, Her Life & Hidden Legacy”

A closely-held family secret hinted at long ago leads Westlake’s own Debra Lape, an amateur genealogist, to uncover a late-19th-century scandal centered on her 2nd great-grandmother. Rural Ohio is the unexpected setting for a 30-year crime spree, where Madam Lizzie lived life large. Her disreputable establishments, The White Pigeon saloon and adjacent house of ill repute, were frequented by a young Warren G. Harding. She may not have changed the course of Presidential history, but Lizzie set the train careening. The presentation will include a book signing. Please register. Tuesday, March 24 (7-8:30 p.m.)

2015 Cleveland Indians

Tribe fans won’t want to miss this program! Curtis Danburg, Senior Director of Communications for the Cleveland Indians will present a “State of the Indians” address, Q and A session, and Raffle Drawing. Tribe fans of all ages are welcome to come find out what to expect from our team this season! Please register. Thursday, March 26 (7-8:45 p.m.)

Cleveland Botanical Garden: Plants for Butterflies, Honeybees, and Hummingbirds

Do you want to attract butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds to your yard? Before you plan and plant your garden find out about the best plants to attract them from a horticulturist from the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Please register.
