ELYRIA – Donald Sheldon, MD, President of University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center recently presented the Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award to Mr. Dave Willets. Developed in 2005 as part of the hospital’s Rewards and Appreciation program, this annually-distributed honor recognizes leaders who consistently demonstrate the values that are essential to the organization’s success. The award was named for Mr. Kevin C. Martin, the late President and Chief Executive Officer of EMH Healthcare from 1998 until February 2009, when he succumbed to cancer.
As Director of Materials Management for UH Elyria Medical Center, Mr. Willets is responsible for UH Elyria Medical Center’s supply chain which includes purchasing, contracting, capital budget management, clinical materials management, patient transportation, courier operations, mailroom/print shop, equipment management and sterile processing. Mr. Willets provides oversight for approximately 50 staff members and manages more than 20 million dollars in spending. The UH Elyria Medical Center supply chain is an integral part of delivering high quality care and support to its patients and customers. Dave has been employed by the hospital for 25 years.
The fact that Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award winners are nominated by their staff members or their peers holds special meaning for its recipients. “I am honored to have been recognized by my team, my peers and senior leadership,” said Mr. Willets. He continued, “I am fortunate to work for an organization that promotes change management, ingenuity, and innovation and further blessed to work with staff members and fellow leaders that are ready to meet the challenges of delivering the highest quality of care in the most efficient manner possible.”
Mr. Willets was promoted to his position of Director of Materials Management by Kevin Martin and worked for him for several years during his tenure as CFO, COO and President and CEO. “Mr. Martin was a focused mentor and encouraged me to embrace change and have the courage to make a difference. Kevin was not one to spend much time listening to complaints, as he was always pushing me to look at ways to improve and find solutions.”
Mr. Willets lives in Elyria and has three adult children, and three grandchildren.
