AVON LAKE, Ohio – The rankings are in and Avon Lake High School scored a spot in the top half of the national rankings on Newsweek’s America’s Top High Schools list for 2015. The school is listed as No. 170. The placement is a jump from the No. 402 ranking in 2014.
According to Newsweek, the rankings are intended to identify public high schools that have the highest performance on state tests and best prepare students for college.
The list is based on a combination of student scores on state tests, SAT and ACT exams, Advanced Placement tests and other factors including graduation rate and the percentage of students who enroll in college after graduation. The data is from the National Center for Education Statistics.
Avon Lake High School scored 82.1 percent for college readiness, boasts a 100 percent graduation rate and has 95.9 percent of its students attending college. The school also met the magazine’s “Equity” measure for helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments.
“While it is always nice to receive honors like this, this is just a small piece of what we do at Avon Lake,” said Superintendent Robert Scott. “We work very hard at educating the whole child. We are proud of our students, teachers and parents. Even though this award is for the high school, education begins in kindergarten and even earlier. It’s a whole process and we are grateful to everyone involved to make our students successful in school and in life. It takes time and we are fortunate to have a great community and great teachers who believe in what we are doing.”
