Doing what’s best for employees and seeking progressive ways to control employee benefit costs, ShurTech Brands LLC recently opened an employee health clinic in its Avon headquarters facility.
Operated and staffed by Cleveland Clinic, the space gives ShurTech’s 350-plus employees convenient access to world-class health care.
The goal is to make achieving health and wellness easier for employees through close management and treatment of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, heart disease and thyroid conditions. Care is also provided for acute medical conditions including cold, flu, strep throat and infections. It also offers weight management and smoking cessation/lung disease prevention programs.

In the first few weeks the clinic has been open, 171 of the company’s workers have stopped in to address medical needs or set baseline biometric measures. 81 workers had not seen a primary care physician in over a year.
“At ShurTech, our people are the most important asset we have. And to ensure they are completely satisfied at work – and at home – we strive to provide the most comprehensive, meaningful benefits possible. By offering an on-site employee health clinic, we’re able to offer outstanding healthcare for our people to maintain a healthy lifestyle and use their personal time focused on other activities,” said John Kahl, chief executive officer for ShurTech Brands. “It’s benefits like these that continue to make ShurTech one of the region’s best places to work.”
“Within our health system, we have taken steps toward value-based care and cost containment through management of chronic conditions. Now, through this relationship with ShurTech, we extend the model into an employer setting,” said Dr. Joseph Knapp, Cleveland Clinic physician and medical director of the clinic. “The on-site clinic is the first of its kind for Cleveland Clinic and is aligned with our goal of patient access, anytime, anywhere.”
The clinic, which includes an exam room and a lab, is staffed by a Cleveland Clinic physician’s assistant who will see employees, their spouses or domestic partners, and their dependents older than age 18 that are covered under ShurTech’s medical insurance plans.
Care begins by acquiring a baseline for detection and prevention of disease by providing participants with complete biometric screenings before they can utilize the clinic. The assessments are designed to identify high-risk conditions and behaviors, such as smoking, diabetes and hypertension, so they can be monitored and treated for best outcomes. Patients can also obtain medication prescriptions and referrals for other procedures, and to other providers, at the clinic.
