Julie Rasmussen, RN, was honored Thursday, Oct. 1 by St. John Medical Center with the DAISY Award for her outstanding performance in caring for patients in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

The DAISY Award is a special recognition offered nationally because of an extraordinary act of compassion or a relationship a nurse has created with a patient that truly made a difference.

In Julie’s case, the nomination was supported by numerous testimonials from families touched by her care.

DSC_6840-11“Julie displays superb wisdom, knowledge and confidence for dealing with patients and families. She shared all she knew I needed to know before I even asked,” said one patient relative. “The true love of her care will remain with me forever. Nothing in this world can express my gratitude.”

“She always answered questions and always made the extra effort to make us feel at ease even when I know we were in her way at times,” said another patient family.

“She has remembered who she has talked to in my large family. She asks often if we have any questions and fully explained the equipment and processes my grandmother was going through,” said a third.

The DAISY Award began in 1999 and is now awarded annually at more than 1,900 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and 14 countries.

Julie was completely surprised and moved by the honor. A turnout of colleagues was present when Julie was presented her award, the The Healer’s Touch sculpture, by Cheryl O’Malley, SJMC Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care and William A. Young, Jr., SJMC President and CEO.

This was totally unexpected. I think all the nurses deserve it,” said Julie. “This is a recognition of what we all do every day, not just me.”
