Ed’s Wins State Dual Team Championship

DSC5668-1St. Edward High wrestlers won their second OHSAA Div. I dual team state wrestling tournament Sunday at St. John Arena in Columbus.

The top-seeded Eagles defeated No. 2 Elyria, 43-28, for the Division I title. They are the only Div. I team to win more than once. The championship comes three years after the Eagles won the inaugural OHSAA event.

It’s the 31st team state title overall for the Eagles, who have won 29 team titles in the individual state tournament.

Clinching it for the Eagles was 182-pound wrestler Tyler Stepic, who after falling behind 2-0, took a 4-2 lead and moved into position to pin, but the officials stopped the match. Elyria’s JT Brown could not continue after a shoulder injury and Stepic won by default, mathematically eliminating the Pioneers with the score 37-16 and only three matches left.

The St. Edward state championship history includes: wrestling (31), hockey (11), football (3), baseball (3), basketball (2), indoor track (3), outdoor track (2), rugby (2), and volleyball (1).
