16th Eagle Run Attracts 1400 Participants

A record turn out of 1,400 runners took part in this year’s Eagle Run.

Community spirit was running high in Avon the morning of May 28 as more than 1400 participants turned out for the 16th annual Eagle Run presented by Mercy.

Proceeds from the run go to benefit the Avon Schools Education Endowment Fund and local charities. Runners had a variety of events to choose from, including a 5 Mile Run, 5K Run & Walk and One Mile Kids Run.

James Humes marked the Memorial Day weekend race by carrying the colors high through the length of the race course. They are seen here coming down the home stretch to the finish line at Avon High.

Overall winner was Julian Meyer, 24, of Peninsula, who smoked the 5 Mile course in 25:26. Women’s winner was 29-year old Sarah Horbol of Rocky River (31:11).

“This event has come a long way since we founded it 16 years ago,” said Eagle Run founder Bud Hagy. “I think we had 125 runners that first year!”

The race is important to the ongoing efforts of Avon teachers to provide students with alternatives to the traditional classroom through endowment opportunities. The money raised is invested and the interest is awarded as grants to fund special projects developed by teachers for Avon students. Other Avon organizations like The French Creek Y receive support from the Eagle Run.
