The Westlake Community Garden at University Hospitals St. John Medical Center officially blessed the 2016 season under glorious June skies last week as Mayor Dennis Clough, UH SJMC President Robert David, gardeners and guests gathered for a summer ceremony on the garden ground just south of the UH SJMC Seidman Cancer Center building.
“We gather today to offer gratitude for the gift of good earth. God has entrusted to us the blessings of the fields and the sun and rain to cultivate our food,” said Garden Coodinator Madeline Crandall in the opening prayer.
A special moment was taken to Frank J. Obery, a pioneer gardener there in the spring of 2014. Over the past two years, Frank took great pride in his garden and was one of the first to request a space for this summer before he passed away at the age of 86.
Members of the Community Garden are asked to plant something in his memory this summer that will be donated to the Westlake Food Pantry.
The Blessing of the Garden was conducted by Rev. Dennis Kristof of the UH SJMC ministry team.
Matt Castele, Eagle Scout representing Troop 401 was also recognized. His Eagle Project – two wooden gateways to the garden – add a practical and attractive addition to the garden.
