O’Neill Healthcare Bay Village: The Importance of Mental Stimulation

Social worker Julie Greer, MSW, LSW spoke
about the importance of keeping your mind active.

Learning more about the importance of keeping your mind active was the focus of a presentation by Julie Greer, MSW, LSW, at O’Neill Healthcare Bay Village last Friday.

An expert on memory care, Julie shared insights on memory function, its importance and ways to keep your memory sharp at any age.

Mental stimulation, she said, can take many forms, ranging from puzzles to brain teasers to word games.

Mixing mental and physical stimulation is especially good for helping a person think clearly and maintain memory as well as motor functions. Painting, tapping a ball while listening to music and gardening are examples.

Mental stimulation can be helpful with depression and anxiety by granting outlets for creativity and emotion. Physical movements help work through frustration and cope with changes.

Memories play a big roll in your overall mental outlook. Julie gave guests Life Review booklets to personalize with individual life histories. Life review is beneficial for people both emotionally and mentally and leave a legacy for family members.
