Westlake Fire Department Partners with St. John Medical Center and University Hospitals to Offer Training
The City of Westlake Fire Department has teamed up with University Hospitals Community Outreach to offer free CPR training for local community members. Participants will learn HeartSaver CPR/AED for adult, child and infant.
“Becoming trained in CPR can mean the difference between life and death in certain medical emergencies,” Rich Mecklenburg, an instructor for University Hospitals said. “We encourage City of Westlake residents, community members and business owners to join us at these free and informative trainings.”
Monthly classes are scheduled at the Westlake Recreation Center (28955 Hilliard Blvd.) on Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. on the following dates:
- February 14
- March 28
- April 18
- May 23
- June 20

About the Westlake Fire Department
Westlake’s 32,000 residents and the many visitors to the city annually are served by a Fire Department consisting of a Chief, an Assistant Chief, administrative staff, a Fire Prevention Bureau, a staff of 42 officers and line firefighters. The department has 2 fire stations, staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing immediate response to all types of emergencies. Westlake fire personnel are all state-certified firefighters and paramedics who consistently participate in continuing education. Aside from basic fire and medical emergencies, fire personnel are trained to respond to hazardous material accidents, trench and building collapses, motor vehicle crashes with special extrication problems and confined space extrications.
Two engines, 2 aerial trucks and 4 medic units are the workhorses responding to approximately 5,600 incidents. The Westshore Central Dispatch Center provides coordinated fire and EMS dispatch for Westlake, Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Ridgeville and Rocky River to improve efficiency and effectiveness of each city’s emergency personnel and equipment which reduces costs.
