Avon Lake City Schools Join Pilot Foodservice Menu Program

The Avon Lake City School district has joined forces with the pilot launch of NutriSmart Menus – “Growing Roots” powered by Pisanick Partners. The goal of this program is to offer the schools the opportunity to test NEW recipes and offerings that are wholesome choices to fuel healthy lives for students.

The philosophy of this program is to encourage menu transparency, nutrition education, while focusing on using food within the program that can be identified with attributes that include no artificial flavors or preservatives, free of pesticides, non – GMO, and free of hormones. The first step in the process was to gain information regarding the current knowledge of the school community and that included a survey to students, parents and staff regarding foodservice in the district.

Each week in February, Avon Lake High School (Tuesdays) and Learwood Middle School (Wednesdays) will be serving and sampling a new NutriSmart Menu item. The themes will be Non-GMO (Feb. 5/6), Vegetarian (Feb. 12/13), Local (Feb. 19/20) and Clean(er) Label (Feb. 26/27). The regularly scheduled lunch menu items will also be offered for those students who choose not to try the new menu options. Foodservice employees will offer samples to students who do not take the new meal and ask them to “vote” on it. A post-assessment survey will also be conducted to see which menu items will be used at the schools in the future.
