The Normandy Senior Living kicked off Empowering U – new campus-wide health initiative to support healthy lifestyles for their residents and the local community – with a lunch and learn on Saturday, February 23 in Avalon Hall at the Breakwater Apartments.
Empowering U is a Normandy Senior Living initiative designed to incorporate a series of classes, educational panels and community events to educate and activate fitness, nutrition and lifestyle habits to live a healthy, empowered life.
The initial lunch and learn event included a panel discussion featuring five experts: Sha’Ran Marshall, Kathryn Eyring, Julie Wise, Melissa Renner and Jack Nemecek.
Each will be offering classes at the Normandy – free and open to the public – in their areas of expertise.
- Melissa Renner is a fitness and nutrition coach, and founder of Active for Life Fitness. She is offering Brain & Body workouts, Silver Strength classes, Seated Yog¬a and Seated Zumba for Grandparents and Grandkids on different dates through March, April and May.
- Jack Nemecek, Fitness and Nutrition Coach, focuses on strengthening basic human movement patterns to help clients feel and move better. His Core Fore and Dumbells & Donuts sessions will be held in March.
- Julie Wise is a well-known registered dietician nutritionist and certified diabetes educator with UH Westshore Primary Care. She advises clients on a variety of concerns with a non-diet ap-proach to wellness, meaning that a restrictive diet is not health for most people who are better off understanding the specific needs of their bodies regarding nutrition and movement.
- Sha’Ran Marshall is CEO and Artistic Director of Dance by Sha’Ran. A veteran dancer with the Cavaliers, Sha-Ran’s 20-plus years of experience bring a variety of movement benefits that help with cognitive awareness, toning, balance and more.
- Kathryn Eyring, producer Aging Gracefully TV, excels at sharing senior insights through inter-views with unstoppable and inspiring aging adults and senior advocates. Her program, ‘Aging Gracefully with a Healthy Brain: 5 Things You Must Know,” will be presented on April 18.
