Pinewood Derby Brings Winter Excitement to Avon

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen and the Two Feathers Pinewood Derby contestants.

The excitement of the Indy 500 came to Heritage School in Avon last Saturday morning as the ‘Two Feathers’ Native Sons and Daughters Club held their annual Pinewood Derby in the Heritage gym.

The winter classic saw kids race their creatively hand-crafted cars down a giant ramp as they vied for age group honors for students ranging from PreK to 6th grade. Kids cheered their cars as the racers hit speeds in excess of 300 MPH as they flew down the ramps.

Mayor Bryan Jensen was also on hand to judge the top car designs.

: The standard Derby cars start as a block of wood 7 inches long by 1.75 inches wide by 1.25 inches high. The block is supplied unsanded with grooves cut in the bottom side to accept the axles. The weight can’t exceed 5 ounces.

Speed results: Kindergarten and under: 1st Cordelia Seaman, 2nd Gilly Schindley and 3rd Gaby Schindley , 1st and 2nd Grades – 1st place Nicole Brett, 2nd Nate Brett and 3rd place Nolan Cox, 3rd and 4th Grades – 1st place Luke Pavey, 2nd Place Alex Capiccioni and 3rd Place Samantha Gorney, 5th Grade and older -1st place Nathan Reith, 2nd Place Jack Pavey and 3rd place Nolan Reith. Parent race winners – 1st place Doug Pavey
