Celebrating Differences Sets Tone for Lorain County Mayors

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen surprised guests at last week’s State of the City address at Tom’s Country Place by arriving incognito and then working the tables as a waiter.

The North Coast Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual State of Cities Luncheon at Tom’s Country Place in Avon the afternoon of March 14.

Featuring the Mayors of Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield and Sheffield Lake, the attitude of gratitude was most prevalent in the addresses from each community mayor.

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen set the tone as – unbeknownst to the several hundred guests in attendance – he served lunch disguised as a waiter!

He took to the podium to the astonishment of guests who failed to recognize him as he served and cleared tables. He then delivered his message of embracing diversity by turning his talk over to Avon High students, who produced a video of community highlights.

“I think the kids get it right,” said Mayor Jensen. “I think that if we, as adults, could get out of the way of our children, we’d find out that they have it right and we have it wrong and that we could together all celebrate our differences.”

Mayor Jensen: By celebrating differences and walking in another’s shoes, the world would be a better place!

“I’d like everybody to remember that we are one nation, under God – including community – indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” says Mayor Jensen in his personal remarks towards the end of the video.

Thanks also to the Avon High Drama Club for helping Mayor Jensen work up his waiter look!
