University Hospitals St. John Medical Center Earns Five Star Rating

University Hospitals St. John Medical Center has earned the highest possible quality rating in the latest scores released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

CMS is the federal agency that administers Medicare. It rates hospitals from one to five stars, based on their safety, efficiency and patient experience.

UH St. John is one of Only 293 of the 4,500 hospitals in the nation to achieve a Five-Star rating in the latest calculations for 2019. The latest figures were released in February. This is the second consecutive Five Star rating for UH St. John.

“We are proud to be among the Five-Star hospitals in the CMS rankings,” says Rob David, President and CEO, UH St. John. Fewer than five per cent of the hospitals in the nation receive Five Stars for Quality. “It is a reflection of the commitment to excellence and compassionate care our staff brings to UH St. John. This quality rating validates what our patients and staff experience every day.”

CMS calculates star ratings based on 57 quality measures. The score encompasses a wide range of hospital experiences and conditions, such as response to heart attack and pneumonia, use of medical imaging, patient survey results, value of care and timeliness of care. Three years of data on readmission rates and mortality are reviewed, and one year of data on infection rates, hospital-acquired conditions and timeliness and effectiveness of care.
