Rose Senior Living at Avon offered answers to this question at a seminar held within the senior living facility’s welcoming Townshend Place.
Experts Tanas Wilcox, RN, M. Ed. and realtor, joined with Karen Ramba of Caring Transitions, a senior living and downsizing resource, to discuss important facts about downsizing.
“It takes 9-12 months for adult children to downsize a property, it takes us 2-3 weeks,” reports Karen. “We will pack you, we will unpack you, we will settle your items of value and then disburse the rest to get the home realtor ready.”
Caring Transitions helps families avoid stress by managing the downsizing process from start to finish. “Our experts quickly organize and sort rooms full or items with care and respect, right-sizing possessions to fit a new living space and taking care of the rest through donations, estate sales and distribution. “It is a thoughtful, total solution that leaves a home clean and prepared for sale, helping families find comfort and relief,” says Karen. With a huge network of online buyers and a proprietary auction site, the company is expert in hosting estate sales and evaluating your possessions.

Tanas Wilcox is an expert in senior home buying and selling. Her experience as a nurse with Lorain County gives her a special understanding of the unique considerations for senior buying or selling a home. Her insights:
1 – Seek advice from a financial advisor or elder care attorney. Pensions, IRAs, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and estate planning can all be impacted by a real estate sale.
2 – Find the right realtor, one who specializes in seniors, who will listen to your needs and recognize your family’s wishes.
3 – Timing: There are theories on Spring vs. Summer vs. Winter home sales. “Timing is what is best for you,” says Tanis. “My busiest month last year was December!”
4 – First impressions are the ONLY impression when selling. “You can see 100 per cent return on your investment in curb appeal,” says Tanis. So spruce up your property with inexpensive shrubs and flowers, fix leaky faucets and crooked doors and declutters. But don’t over-upgrade with expensive renovations that may not appeal to a prospective buyer.
5- Pricing: Find out what your home is worth through a comparative market analysis prepared by your realtor. Be willing to adjust price and strategy in the present market to determine a bottom line that fits your need.
6 – Making the Move: Plan ahead by getting legal, medical and family matters in order. Visit senior living communities with a family member, senior advisor or realtor to make your next home a happy healthy transition.
