Avon Tops Avon Lake to Claim Silver Rail Trophy

Avon Coach Mike Elder receives the Silver Rail trophy from Bob Hill of the Avon Lions Club.

The classic Avon-Avon Lake football rivalry kicked off the 2019 season in memorable fashion last Friday night as the host Eagles topped the Shoremen, 13-12, in front of a packed house at Avon’s Firment Stadium.

The win earned the Silver Rail trophy for the Eagles, awarded each year by the Lion’s Club to the victor of this border wars clash.

The outcome avenged a loss in the season-opener for the Eagles last year in a game that set the stage for these two teams to eventually share the Southwestern Conference championship. Avon Lake later lost to Olmsted Falls for the only blemish on their SWC slate.

Slick senior running back Nick Perusek used his speed and maneuverability to pace the Eagle offense. Bolstered by great trench work from the Eagle offensive line, Perusek broke a 23 yard screen midway through the first quarter to lift the Eagles to a 7-0 lead.

Avon threatened again in the second quarter, but an end zone interception set up a long drive and 4-yard TD by Gage Deusey for Avon Lake. A missed PAT made it 7-6.

Avon’s defense then rose to the occasion several times in the second half, stopping AL drives and limited threats to a pair of Harry Hebert field goals.

Avon finally found the end zone again in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard TD from Perusek, who ran into the welcoming arms of the huge Avon student section for a spirited celebration.

Avon visits 0-1 Lorain this week while Avon Lake travels to Dayton-area Clinton-Massie (1-0) this weekend.
