During this trying time, the Westlake Police Dept. is keeping an extra vigilant eye on the most vulnerable of our population.
On 3/21/20 at about 10AM a Westlake citizen did not answer their senior home check call after police tried several times. Officers were dispatched to check on the elderly male. After finding that he was not home, the postal carrier in the neighborhood was contacted and revealed that the citizen had been picking up his mail as expected recently. The grateful man called WPD at about 11am to report that he had just stepped out and missed the calls. He did divulge that he was in need of some groceries to the dispatcher. Westlake employees assured that the groceries were picked up and an officer delivered them to the man’s house.
Are You OK?
The City of Westlake’s Are You OK? Program is available all year round but may be especially important in these times of social isolation:
Westlake Police Department works in conjunction with the Westlake Center for Community Services to manage the free home check calling service Are You Okay?™ for senior citizens and other qualified residents.
Participants in the city receive a daily call to check on their welfare. If the call is not answered, the Police Department is notified and an officer is dispatched to the home to conduct a personal check-in visit.

OVI
On 3/23/20 at approx. 2AM officers stopped a vehicle on Dover Center at Hilliard for equipment and traffic violations. Although he smelled of an alcoholic beverage, the driver denied consuming any booze. After being unable to recite the alphabet A to Z – 2 times, the 19yo from Lorain admitted that he might have been drinking “a little.” The male was field tested and arrested for OVI. His vehicle was impounded before he was transported to the Westlake jail. The driver submitted to a breath test which showed him to be over 2 and ½ times the legal limit. His license was suspended and he was charged with OVI, BAC, underage consumption and traffic violations.
On Foot on I-90
On 3/25/20 at approx. 8:00AM WPD received a call from the State Highway Patrol relaying information that a man was walking on I90 near Cahoon. Our officer arrived to find a male with a backpack walking on the highway waving a 9/11 memorial flag at passing motorists. At first, the male would not follow the officer’s commands to stop but was soon detained. The 28yo from Big Rapids, MI was speaking incoherently and the CIT trained officers on scene believed he needed to be evaluated by professionals. The Westlake Fire Dept transported him safely to the hospital for treatment. No charges were filed.
Warrants
On 3/27/20 at approx. 2:30AM officers stopped a vehicle on Columbia south of Detroit Rd for traffic and license violations. The driver was driving under suspension and the passenger was found to have several outstanding warrants for shoplifting and probation violations. The 39yo female passenger who listed an Atwater, OH address, was transported to the hospital for claimed medical issues. The agencies who were looking for her were advised. During the incident the passenger was also found to be in possession of split up pills which will be sent to the crime lab for analysis. Charges for both the driver and passenger will be determined by the city prosecutor.
