Avon Lake Tops Avon for Silver Rail Trophy

If you like the best in high school football, look no further than the Avon-Avon Lake battle for the Silver Rail Trophy each year.

The annual grudge match between “North” (Avon Lake) and “South” (Avon) was held at Avon’s Walhberg Stadium Friday night and lived up to the hype as South prevailed, 30-24, in a game marked by both turnovers drama.

Avon Lake improved to 4-0 in winning its first Silver Rail trophy since 2018 while Avon, which looked to be driving for a game-winning touchdown only to lose possession on a fumble at the North 25 yard line with just 2:30 left in the game, slipped to 2-2.

Two fumbles, an interception and a critical blocked punt for a TD aided Avon Lake in coming back from a 10-0 deficit in the first quarter to take a 30-10 halftime lead.

Avon staged a furious second half, however, chipping away at the Shoremen lead until the late turnover that sealed the exciting win.
