Local Non Profit Wins Big for Sports with its Annual Demon Derby Event

In the spring of 2020, like most other non-profits, Westlake Demons Athletic Boosters (WDAB) canceled its annual in-person fundraiser.

“We got by,” said WDAB President Virnette House Browning. “Budgets were tighter and we had to cut back like many other non-profits in the area,” said House-Browning.

But not this year.

Saturday, April 9 was a great night for the organization. With over 300 attendees and support from many local businesses, WDAB raised nearly $25,000.

Emceed by Jerry Pae and sponsored by locally based businesses Northern Ohio Endoscopy Center, SyncShow, Spyglass, Prime Meats, North Coast Jaw & Implant Center, Dr. Marcietta Wilson-Coleman, Westlake Dental Center, Collision Bend Brewery, AA Fire Protection & Northern Ohio EMS, and the Westlake High School Girls Soccer Team, the event featured horse racing, casino tables, raffle prizes, and sideboard bets.

“It was so exciting to see 300 people come out dressed in their derby attire, ready to have a great time, all for a good cause,” said Demon Derby Event Chair and WDAB Vice President Delicia Ostrowski. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout and the generosity of our sponsors and community.”

The Westlake Demons Athletic Boosters supports Westlake High School sports teams by providing funding for uniforms, equipment, an onsite T-3 training facility, field maintenance, off site rental fees, end-of-season awards, and the Alumni Hall of Fame showcase.
