Avon Celebrates Arbor Day

The Avon Tree Commission presented the first-ever Avon Arbor Day celebration at Every Child’s Playground, next to the Avon Aquatic Facility, 36265 Detroit Road, from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 5.

Opening ceremonies featured Mayor Bryan Jensen. Free community and family activities included the dedication of a new city Christmas tree, tree planting and pruning demonstrations, a tree-themed book on Storybook Trail, a scavenger hunt, tree identification, planting and care information, live music by Neil Young tribute act Curt Vigg and a tree sapling giveaway, while supplies lasted.

There also was pizza and beer available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Avon Lions LEO Club.

Arbor Day typically is celebrated on the last Friday in April, according to the National Arbor Day Foundation, but the Avon Tree Commission chose November rather than April to celebrate because it said the fall was better for planting trees.

In the past year, the City of Avon has invested more than $200,000 in city reforestation and tree planting projects.
